Egr valve

Postby The cyclone » Sat Nov 28, 2009 9:19 pm

Hi guys i know this has been coverd before, but just cant find out if you can unbolt the egr pipe at the manifold and put a plate inbetween and bolt back, do you have to take the throttle plate out as i dont really want to. The engine is a bannana with 76k completly unmodified. Many thanks. Paul

Disconnect egr rod off pump, pull it till flap is in fully open position (remove rubber inlet pipe & look if nesc.)
Ty-wrap rod in that position, job done & easy to put back if desired.... :)

Thats the thread that explains how to do it. Don't need to remove the valve or blank anything.

Cool thanks for that. Could you blank off the manifold and leave the rod and flap on, as ive seen a couple like this, do you know wot difference it makes?

Not too clear on exactly where you are intending to blank. Are you talking about blanking the pipe that runs from the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve?

As I understand it, without the throttle valve, there is no vacuum (or at least not enough) to draw the gases up from the exhaust manifold, so by removing the throttle valve (or tying it open) it prevents exhaust gas recirculating without the need for any blanks.

I don't know enough about the EGR system to tell you one way or the other, but out of interest is there a particular reason you would rather do it this way?

I did both, blanked off at the manifold and tied the flap open

Trigger did you try it with a plate between the egr and manifold without taking the plate out?

You can put a blank in as an added measure

If you want to leave the operating rod in place remove the butterfly.

Basically when the butterfly is closed (low throttle) a vacuum is created behind it. This "sucks" the EGR valve open allowing the exhaust gas to enter. By removing the butterfly or cable tieing it open there is no vac and the valve cant open.

However it is feasable (although not nessesairily true) that the EGR valve could get gunged up and allow the exhaust to pass through without a vacuum.

Apologies if I havent worded it wondefully, I have had a few drinks

NO,if you blank the manifold but leave inlet flap in at closed throttle it will choke itself (or try to breathe through oil filler cap!)

The flap doesnt shut completely at idle so some air is drawn thru, the rest in thru egr valve (opened by the vacuum created at rear of closed throttle plate)
So,if you left flap in & blanked egr,at closed throttle theres no air supply.....the vacuum then created only other place to "get air" is thru oil filler cap/breather

What about removing the EGR altogether?

you would still have to remove the butterfly

I followed the instructions in the link and its worked fine for me, I dont think there is any point in confusing the issue with tech things, at the end of the day what is described in the link( egr and pump mod) explains it all, and it works ! speaking purely as a non technical persons point of view, Steve

i did mine too but reconnected etc last night as i cant live with the induction roar.... hasnt made any difference but is quieter which i like.
it only really operates with engine idling/closed throttle anyway .but withit connected surely it aids coldstarting and warmup as its introducing hot gases back into inlet???? thats my view on it anyway.

It would not aid coldstarting cos when the engine is cold there are no hot gases to introduce back into inlet
