Either way, according to this it sounds to me like ford recommend 10/40 over 5/30

but they recommend 10w-30 for temps above -20, which is same viscosity oil as 5w-30.

i recon in them days 5w-30 was to expensive to be recommended.

No its not... at lease not when the oil is cold! And they recommend it for optimum efficiency not engine life!

As i have already stated i have spoken to oil suppliers and experienced mechanics and not one said to use 5.30 in a 10+ yr old van with 150k miles on the clock ,the preference seems to be to go for a thicker oil the older and more miles an engine has under its belt .No one is either right or wrong on this one because it appears several oil types can be used without fear of catastrophe.

Sorry but you're wrong. Ford run engines on test beds and in test vans for hundreds of thousands of miles for these exact purposes.

hi .

I have just done a oil change on my 180,000 miles tranny 1996 2.5 and used (Total ) 15w 30 is this OK ???,or should I treat it as a wash through and replece it again,I am In a warmer climate mainly in Summer but still have a winter as based in south west france if this makes a difference.

My van has had 15w/40 mineral in it since its first oil change (dont know what it left ford with but looks like 10/40 from the manual) and its been fine. Its on a 190,000 now.

Its in the list of oils you can use so leave it be. However if you start getting starting problems in the winter change it for a thinner grade

all the chart is showing is different grade oil tempertures.

but they dont recommend a 15w-40 and is it mineral oil you got :?:

In the old days when I shopped a local ford garage, they had 20w50 for pinto's and 15w40 for diesels (mineral) (and poss' valvers), I'm not sure if I recall a fully synth, quite possibly, but doubt it was 5w30 and less than 40 quid a gallon!

It makes me laugh on here that a lot of folks would piss in a radiator rather than buy antifreeze at a tenner, yet they're all willing to buy the magic 5w30 fully synth for the old mk5's.... don't forget it not just a gallon!!... like they keep saying on public radio... 'other oils are available'

5w30 was 'made' for zetec engines, narrow oil ways and hydraulic tappets....

Here is my self awareness of oils...

I had a couple of litres of fully sythetic 15w50 (motul) what I run in my bike, to buy another 2 litres of this stuff is expensive.... BUT! M&P had some fully synthetic 'ATV' (for some reason, it's 'only' four 4 stroke off road vehicles?) 10w40 oil at 3 quid a litre (ipone, clearence)... guess what??? Yup 2+2 equals four, different brand, different grade.. same bottle :D

And despite my use of fully synthetic on the bike, it doesn't really need it (semi, more than adequate!)... just an expensive bad habit :?

I agree. Fully synth in a Di is a waste of money. Semi is more than adequate. You can keep you fully synth for Duratorqs and highly modded engines.

Semi-synth is fine, it's fully synth that's a waste of money on older engines.
