Can anybody join in the fun :?: :?:
I bought the great white whale about 18 months ago and to tell the truth I was thinking I'd made a big mistake. Such a pig to start and me with no idea about diesels. I found this forum and one by one I did all the things recommended for hard starting. Check all connections, new starter, fuel filter, the pump tweak, etc. but none of it made any noticeable difference when it came to starting if the temp was near freezing. Then I spotted some Ford 5w30 on Fleabay at £16 a pop. That works out at less than half the price of any ordinary crap here in France so I bought it. Cured the starting problem. The van sits out front for a couple of weeks at a time and when I get in it starts immediately. Shame about the bloody rust :!:

Could you mix half and half 5w/30 and 10w/40 semi to get a 7.5w/35? Would that be a good compromise to get the best of both worlds? Don't know if it works like that though :? Perhaps I'm stupid
1990 LWB Mk3 twin wheel 190 minibus (My favourite but stolen)
1998 LDV Convoy Ford DI engine but... yuk, yuk, yuk (bought in desperation, sold 2 months later)
1997 SWB Mk5 minibus (Great but small)
2001 LWB Mk5 TD 100ps Minibus (hmm..)
Get me to that gig!

I like your logic.
I use an old Peugeot as a runabout here and it has a very leaky power steering rack. Got very afraid when I saw the price of the oil to top up. Then remembered I have some MT75 gearbox oil for the Whale. Works a treat. Now, did I read somewhere that you can pee into your rad to save on antifreeze?

well thats basically what happens to oil, the viscosity changes depending on so many different things, including the type of oil used so thats why ford now recommend 10w-30 in the 2.5di and 5w-30 for northern europe(colder climates) as this oil now behaves different as it used to.

Ford have now changed their oil to Fully synthetic, so again oil has changed and improved with time.

old semi, formula E.

Not for me ,engine too old and high miles .Will stick with semi thicker grades or even good quality mineral oil.
