Nice to see a split opinion although I dont know for certain I would put 10/40 in now as Im with Birdy on this it make sense and I have heard a very wise mechanic who said the same thing I know what Ford said and you say about the Ford test beds but experience can show otherwise

Heres the page relating to engine oil in the early mk5 handbook... Notice ford recommed 10/40

we especially recommend you use *** SAE 10W40 or *** 5W50

doesn't mention 5/30 except on the pic...

Either way, according to this it sounds to me like ford recommend 10/40 over 5/30

It's not a case of losing, that is an old superseded manual. The later manuals and Ford's workshop manuals tell a different story and as you've already said yourself, technology has moved on.

Please post the graph from the later manuals so we can all compare the change in thought by Ford.

Ford would tell you dogshit was best if they thought you were gonna buy it off them....

It's an old diesel design... it will cope with almost anything, BUT... 5w30 (or poss 10w40) FULLY SYNTHETIC offers the best protection, but isn't ness'

5w-30 semi synthetic will protect in this country for temps you will have.
but mineral oil from new, does not have the properties to resist deteriation, plus cheap oil does not have the addatives required to meet any of fords spec, and is generally not good at low temps.
the ford handbook even says to choose what oil you require for temps.

using a sae40 oil is 30% thicker than a sae30 oil, so what reason would you want to use a higher viscosity oil in your engine that is recommended :?: :?: :?:
age :?: using a higher viscosity engine oil will only cause more problems

The point is that ford recommended 10w/40 if you read the blurb... (or 10w30 if all you are worried about is optimum fuel economy) I wouldnt want to put a thinner oil in!

Truth is The Di will be happy with almost any slippery stuff as its blood because it is such a durable engine,
