Windscreen replacement

Postby williamraff » Sun May 30, 2010 3:06 pm

Hi folks, can anyone advise whether transplanting a MK5 SWB windscreen from a scrapper is a viable operation or does it have to be a supply and fit from a specialist :? If this is the case can anyone recommend a good (cheap) fitter?

Chers,Will :)

If the screen is already out then it would be possible to refit yourself with the proper bonding glue. If the screen is still in the scrapper then i wouldnt bother as 9/10 times it will chip/crack as getting them out is murder! The surrounding metal needs to be VERY clean and free from rust if poss! Hope this helps!

i quite often cut screens out to put in other vehicles
you need some wire

scroll down bottom left
i use the gold stuff in a length of 12 inch and a pair of mole grips each end (and a helper)
for the windscreen sealent you need to go to your local factor i pay $8 for a tube that i warm up in the kettle prior to use

You want to use windscreen adhesive not windscreen sealant, sealant and adhesive are 2 totally different things.

Thanks all for the replies, I dont have a scrapper available, I just wondered if the procedure was possible. I might give it a try though, the website link was really helpful.
Cheers Will :)

it is possible but not really worth it a new windscreen can be had for £75 to £95 by the time you have bought a second hand windscreen and bought the glue and primers it would probably work out the same

Any pointers where to try? My local guy quoted me £120 or so and that was 4 years ago - Screen looking very shabby now!

Thanks
