Heater blower not working

Postby Hastings » Sat Sep 11, 2010 8:07 pm

Hi everyone & anyone
I can see this subject has been well discussed, anyway blower not working on any of the settings, the lights on the control switches come on, Got another motor from the scrappy today plugged it in still does not work.
Read all the replies here and a lot of people talk about the resistor, I don't know what that would look like but checked behind the head lamp & under the dash near clutch pedal. could the fault be the switch ? cheers any replies would be appreciated.

Most probably the resistor has gone so the fan only worked on speed 3 then the wiring on the back of the switch has melted.

The resister is usually somewhere behind the front light on the drivers side and is a coil of metal wound round a ceramic pot if I remember right.

Might be a silly question but seeing as the fan switch isnt working at all have you checked the fuses?

Usualy if the resistor has blown, the fan only works on full speed = resistor bypassed

Hi Thanks for all you replies, I had left trying to fix for a few days as it was doing my head in Will check it out again today.

Re the fuses yes first thing I checked and it sounds like if it is the resistor it would still work on setting 3, it's not working on any stetting. I might try changing the switch for the settings.

Thanks again for all the advise

What I have said is a common failure.

Hi I have found the heater resistor at last and thought I would share this info with anyone who has the same problem ON A MK4 X PLATE it is inside the housing where the blower fits in to, so to remove it you have to take out the blower then unplug the wiring to it and then un do the 2 small screws and remove it from inside of the heater housing.

P plate will be near the headlight as in the photos in the link above. If it's not there then someone may have already moved it.
