Running 1999 Transit on veggie oil

Postby Builderfromhell » Mon Nov 08, 2010 8:39 pm

Have a 1997 Ford Transit and have been trying to find info. on the net about using waste vegetable oil (WVO) as a fuel. I know the oil must be cleaned and have water removed before putting in fuel tank. I have also read somewhere that the old Bosch fuel pumps will handle veggie oil but the Lucas pumps won't.

Anyone had experience of using veggie oil on a similar age transit?

I think the best advice you will get here is not to do it! there are loads of posts here about the problems of using veg oil, search through the forums, you might change your mind.

from my experience using veg oil tends to destroy inj pumps in a relativly short time.

Nope. Take some old cooking oil, pop it through the transesterification process and it'll be fine. My mate has an old Defender with a tranny 2.5di conversion. Biodiesel in the winter and bio/wvo mix in the summer. He just sifts the lumpy bits out with a pair of pants and pours it straight in.

2.5di - Bullet proof if you're nice to them

I'm running a 97 LWB Transit minibus which has done about 20,000 miles on veg oil.

If you want to use WVO then It can be a dirty smelly business and you will need to invest a bit of time and some cash to get set up properly but the hardest part is finding a reliable source of oil. Here's a few pointers to get you thinking

1] Make absolutely sure its a Bosch pump.

2] The oil MUST be filtered to less than 10micron (about what your fuel filter is rated at) and preferably less than 5 micron otherwise you will use a lot of fuel filters.

3] It must be totally free of any water (Just heat it to about 120deg and the water will have evaporated when it stops spitting)

4] In cold weather it's best to add 10% petrol to help to thin it.

5] Being a DI engine it will start to coke up and you will start to get ring gumming from the build up of unburnt oil when the engine is cold. This can be helped with water injection just before each oil change or you could twin tank it so you start and finish on diesel but run on veg when the engine is hot.

Good luck

if you are gonna do it, a local chinese or indian take away will probably give u the oil free or for a small fee as they are legally supposed to pay to have it disposed of. currently working in the catering trade i know these things. we costantly have people at our back door asking for used oil. your average commercial kitchen will go through 40-80 litres a week. at the hotel we go through about 100 litres weekly and pay to have it uplifted. you could even be cheeky and just have a look round the back of take aways as they tend to leave the old stuff outside.

A guy was arrested locally not so long ago for taking oil from behind a shop. Shop pressed charges "to teach him a lesson" as the shop was getting 10p a litre for the oil from a recycling company. It is theft!

Wow that's a lot of oil!

I used to run a chippy a few years ago and in 5/6yrs I was running it I only got 20litres of oil taken away as there was something wrong with it as it foamed up when it got hot.
I don't understand why chippies etc are throwing away oil?

ive doneafew vehicles on svo and wvo ....the only way to have trouble free wvo conversion is to have twin tank conversion with heated fuel lines ...2 x 3way selinoids are a god send ...so you start on diesel in the mornin and when engine is warm switch to wvo , then before you stop change back to diesel.....pumps ,fuel lines and injectors dont like cold wvo...and will cost you more thanyou save .......you need to warm the oil or you WILL knacker your pump..
