DOHC Tourneo

Postby GrimBus » Wed Nov 17, 2010 12:22 pm

Had a search about on here and found conflicting info to what I've been told elsewhere.
Having put 15/40 in I now have a noisy tensioner I think, so am going for 10/30 as read on here to see if that sorts it.

Where can I get a book which covers my engine? Don't mind if it's a car book as it's only the engine stuff I need, or is there a Haynes book I haven't found on the lists yet for the DOHC Transit :)
Thanks in advance for any pointers

Any advice on why my tensioner has gone up the creek? It was fine till I changed the oil, I've now swapped to 10/30 and it is getting worse :?
It started by intermittently working and going quiet for 4 or 5 secs then noisy over and over and now the noisy period is lasting longer and longer :(

Get your tensioner sorted ASAP, if it breaks up or the chain comes off your are stuffed!

Any haynes manual for the 2.0 DOHC (I4) will do, Sierra, Granada etc, there are subltle differences but the basics are the same, including the Hydraulic Tensioner setup.

I don't think that Haynes covered the DOHC in a Transit book, but the late Sierra one should do (up to 1993)

Cheers for the replies.

Is it just the plunger that I fit or do I need a kit? Am I talking Ford or is there a pattern option that people trust? :)

Tried 5/30 semi just incase it revived the tensioners abilities :| but no luck :(

Tried some snake oil additive too just incase. These things never work for me but the mechanic next door said this one does it'll revive the plunger. Guess what  same

What I don't get is that all was well before I changed the oil :? Ho hum.

Anyway, now stripped and waiting for my chain kit to arrive, just popped to Fords and bought new guides for good measure.

There are marks on the sides of the chain links where it was trying to make a run for it
Off the road for a few days now due to the weekend post etc

Just gotta work out how to time her up now

I have a CD with the DOHC manual on (poss a bit late now you've stripped it) If you PM me your addy I'll post you one over, covers some EFi banter aswell.... you are fitting a new tensioner I presume, not trying to bodge the old one!

Appreciate the offer :) PM sent.
I've ordered new after reading stuff on here.
I've never had anything to do with the DOHC motor before. It would have been nice if it gave me time to do some research before needing surgery  Only had it about 2 weeks.

Many thanks to Darkbluevanman 8) Got here before the flipping kit, which took longer to come than planned causing logistical nightmares that are inevitable when these things happen

Anyway, had a look and the chain had been catching and trying to derail

Got me box of bits

Job's a goodun

Chain didn't look worn to me compared to the new one, no worn tensioner teeth etc I think the tensioner plunger was playing up :? Fitted new guides too just to be safe.
All done now so I can rest easy

Motor is quieter now than before, no rattle at all on cold start up etc and has that smooth feel that you always get when you know you've given it some TLC 8)
Cheers for the advice given :)
