Disabling the EGR on mine made a heck of a difference to the way it drove. Hills which previously were 'flat stick in a low gear' could now be taken with less throttle in a higher gear. Made it much more pleasant to drive. Reduced the smoke from the tailpipe too. Whether this is down to plain old fashioned not having to cane it everywhere, or because the engine is no longer objecting to breathing its own farts, or some combination of both, I know not for certain.
Do it. What have you got to lose?. If you don't like it, you can always put things back as they were.
