I crossed into the LEZ several months ago. I didn't even know there was an LEZ....until I got a note through the post saying I owed TFL for a £250 fine, £500 if I didn't pay within 2 weeks. Now, I know this might cause a bit of controversy but I am now on my second appeal and waiting to hear the hearing end of August.
I have always known about the Central London congestion charge, but never ever heard of either the ULEZ or the LEZ. TFL say they have done huge media campaigns to tell everyone. I have never seen anything about them. Only one person I have since spoken to knows of these two Zones. She knows about it because she works in the haulage industry.
The very high majority of people outside London have no idea about these extra zones, (unless they are in the transport/haulage industry). I am all for lessening emissions, hence my desire to get on the Veggie Oil track. So I completely understand it is a good idea...but tell us about it!
My main point to the appeals committee is that they have not done a good enough job in telling the public about these other two zones. Who in their right mind would cross into the zone knowing they would have to pay £250 for doing so? Not me! And I tell you what, I spent several months crossing in and out of the zones, unknowingly, (why I only have one fine is beyond me!), and I promise you, not once did I ever see one of their small, green and white signs with LEZ on them! Of course now I know of the scheme....I see them everywhere, and of course I will never ever go near one again! August 29th is the hearing.....
All the best with your compliance work.
