a common Di one is oil leaking from the crank seal- if you can live with it its not a major hassle

as said oil on lining also soft engine mounts or a tired clutch - on these it's usually a tired clutch - good luck

It can be a rusty imput shaft, especially on older or unused vehicles. Clean up and dab a little copper grease on the splines, but not too much.

clutch judder

Postby martin lewis » Sat Dec 09, 2006 7:15 pm

if you have the clutch off take the flywheel off and have your local engineering shop check the run out, i had vicious judder which turned out to be a distorted flywheel , re-machining the working faces fixed the problem.

Had the same problem, the propshaft centre bearing was wrecked, but wasn't cured completely until new clutch fitted.

Sticky clutch cable could be the cause too.

My MKII does it too. It seems to be better when cold and when it's had some stick, which I suppose suggests it's an oil thing.

2.5di Clutch Judder

Postby TransitNut » Mon Jan 01, 2007 11:43 pm

I've had this problem since fitting a "reconditioned" gearbox along with a new clutch to my Mk5.

I Fitted a new crank seal and input shaft bearing (Genuine Ford) at the same time as the gearbox, so in theory the rear crank oil seal output bearing and clutch should have been OK!

The problem doesn't exist when the engine is cold but worsens when up to normal temperature and is highlighted even more when loaded.

Keeping the revs a little higher than would normally be required when pulling away or reversing makes the problem dissapear.

So I investigated all the usual recommendations engine/gearbox mountings, propshaft alignment & bearings, rear diff bearings all to no avail.

So I removed the gearbox (for the 4th time, don't ask) and the clutch, and it could be seen that the clutch plate hadn't been running perfectly true by the marks on the flywheel, further investigation revealed the input shaft on the gearbox is very slightly worn at the point where it sits inside the rear crankshaft output bearing.

I'd retained the old bearing (which wasn't at all worn but as I'd bought a replacement I had fitted the new one), and discovered after taking some accurate measurements I could install both bearings into the crankshaft and install the gearbox OK.

This hasn't entirely celared the judder but has improved things until I can get "another" replacement gearbox this time without a worn input shaft.

Clutch Judder

Postby Terry » Tue Jan 30, 2007 8:43 am

If its a case of oil on the clutch plate a get you home measure is,
squirt some of the contents of a C.T.C.(Carbon Tetra Chloride) fire extinguisher into the bell housing while someone operates the clutch..
(its what the 'dry cleaners' use to degrease clothes).
I got a little black book with me poems in

How much do we squirt in the bell housing?
Who needs to inhale to most for best results, the van or us?

Oh, try putting the plate in boiling water.
(works on brakes, have tried it)

Can also be worth checking the tension of "u" bolts on rear springs.
