Mk5 2.5Di has no glow plugs, this is the same on 99% of UK Mk5's very few were fitted with glow plugs :!:

cold starting

Postby bogdoff2france » Mon Oct 30, 2006 7:19 am

I will be very interested in this as my newly aquired transit I know has this problem. The winter can be short but sharp here. The previous owner is a friend and we tried to find the reason last winter, even putting a new battery on it.

The only thought I had as it doesnt have glow plugs or any pre-heating device that I can see, is if the earth was in poor condition. :? But this is more relavent to a petrol not a diesel.

Please please find an answer or the old peugeot will be pressed into action once the frosts come.
Less fragile than the french, but flippin slow.

First thing i would do assuming the battery is good, is check all the battery connections :!: ie. the main battery to starter motor one and the earth to engine and earth to body :!:

also if the oil hasn't been changed for a while change that and fit a new oil filter :D

And after that little lot, I would check the tappets  'cause if they are either too tight or too loose it will affect the compression and or what volume of air gets compressed

 An oil and filter change before the sharp frost sets in, is always a good idea :D (makes it lighter for the starter motor when trying to start  )

I also have this problem. I park on a hill!

I've also bought a booster from machinemart which is my backup . . .

When my batteries are fully charged from the mains and brought out to the van it will start in any weather, but (even not very) depleted batteries won't start it when it's very cold.

A new starter normally fixes it because it's the connection to the starter that is normally dodgy, if you clean the old one up and put it back I bet it works!
