My 1999 2.5 DI had the cold starting problem aswell so i bought a new batterey but to no change so i then cleaned up the earths still no good . It would start with a jump but only just and was slow to turn over so my mate whos an auto spark had a look ,he wired the starter straight to the batterey but still nothing so he fitted a new starter he had in stock . Bobs your uncle started first crank and the best part was the starter only cost me £55 . God i love fords.
Maybe worth trying another starter as my mate reckons its a common problem.
Good luck.

Bugger , I forgot i'd posted here last year and started a new thread :$ , the old sod still plays up and i'm now considering the starter leads , and adding another battery , to make life easier. Just need to get another battery tray , and some more heavy cabling as I want to run power into the van as it is a service barge for my rallying too. I am DEFFO in the cold start club!

Seems like were all in the cold start boat here, just a question about my earth should it go to the chassis or the body and has anyone got any imformation on what starter motor is used in a 2.5 di,Mk3 1991.
Also would it be a waste of time to reco the old one before biting the bullet and buying a new starter.

Cheers

Hi there

Read through this looking for that one word - the cold start plug.
My dad kept the Haynes-manual, so I cannot chek what the plug is called in English - German is "Flammkerze", translating to "flameplug".

Checked that when mine had about 80.000 km (50.000 miles ?) and the plug was gone to pieces - some of which were about to fall into the intake manifold.

Ever checked yours ?

I might have missed something here, I admit, but as I never had any starting trouble... - just trying to help ! :-)

Regards

As far as I know this was never optional in Gemany - and "our" climates do not differ that much, do they ? That is what strikes me !
(Besides, I had only a short time with my mew Haynes-manual before my dad wanted to read it, but I did not get the impression that there ever was an option - so this is absolutely new to me - as well as unbelievable. What were they thinking ? That Trannys do not go on holidays or are never sold ?)

And considering this thread I HAVE to take your statement as ironic.... ?!?!? :-)

Hey guys, have read this site for a while has helped me with my MK5 Di 1996 76...
Thought i'd just throw my bit in in case it helps anyone.
Starts on the button until temp is -0.000001 then doesn't!!!!
Changed battery, cleaned stuff up, greased up, changed fuel filter etc , nothing.
Then put bowl of hot water in compartment and it started, moved on to a hot water bottle to be more specific and find out what actually needed heating, but was taking too long to get out the door.
Eventually gave up. Bought a booster pack, starts everytime.

I ordered the cold start option when I bought my van (smiley banana) in case I ended up in eastern Europe in the winter (not unprecedented). In 12 years since, I only saw the warning light come on once. The van has always started first time and still has the original starter motor. As soon as I notice that the starter is sounding just a little bit sluggish, I fit a new Ford battery. You have to discipline yourself to do it in the summer when it's not actually necessary.
