Good starting in cold weather.

Postby winterheating » Sun Dec 20, 2009 9:50 pm

just been out in my van, checked the battery voltage by the cluster, and the engine temp.

this is a 05 mk6 100ps, runs well, has a new starter, all connections cleaned and good, has no glowplugs connected, mainly just because the main common wire was damaged so i removed it.

the temp showed -9c  had DTC 9359 (low battery voltage i think) and battery voltage was 11.9v
i knew it would be low as i managed to get the van air locked at the start of the week, and had to do a lot of cranking  i just havn't got round to charging it, but will have to do so otherwise battery will be damaged soon if not allready
its the original motorcraft one, that ive allready topped up and fully charged a while ago after changing fuel pump.

anyway 11.9v engine at -9degrees cranked over 2 full turns today  longest yet, while cranking voltage dropped to 10v
it fired up went to 13.5 for a couple of se3conds then to 14.2volts.

so really considering the conditions of battery its good starter.
as soon as i charge the battery correctly it will most prob start instant on the button like it normally does. and battery voltage should be a lot more stable when cranking.

so basically this duratorque with flat battery, and no glowplugs, correct oil, good connectios, right compression, correct timing, good fuel pump, injectors and starter does start very well in -9 conditions.

What you should say is that - your duratorue with flat battery and no glowplugs does start very well in -9 conditions

Probably a well serviced engine running the correct oil.

edit again, can't think of anything else that could cause bad starting :?:
obviuosly a good battery is essential if i left it it prob would only last a few more days like this
and then glow plugs may help another engine start.
theres all these factors that make every van different.

same thing really, your mk7 obviously has a a fault/s which is causing bad starting and mk5 may or may not be 100% perfect, but doesn't have starting probs.

and dose your mk5 start instant :?: like it should.

isnt there a pcm update for cold starting on a mk7 :?:

Don't get me wrong, it starts ok but just turns over a couple of times first...the Mk5 is totally instant, barely turns over & fires

i'm pretty confident as soon as i fully charge the battery on mine it will start istantly in -9 conditions without turning like your mk5. it did the other week when it was just as cold with a full battery anyway.

 you could check your voltage on, they have a common fault with the second batterys dont they :?:

I checked them the other day and they both showed about 12.5V with engine off..about 14V running.. same as my MK5...I love my MK7 but it cost me a lot...I love my Mk5, it cost me little, owes me nothing and just goes on & on & onnnnnnnnnn
