Intermittent non starting

Postby jubilee » Sun May 19, 2013 6:38 pm

Hi all - past 2 days have been having some trouble starting the van.

Insert key - lights come on as normal - all go out as normal except the oil and battery light.
Can here a click when the key is turned, and the fuel pump? pressurising ?

Nothing else happens, no other warning lights at all, red PATS light goes briefly solid red then blank (normal I think) - no glow plug light after its initial operation.

First time I thought the chip in the key may have 'gone' but both keys produce the same result. There is no rapid clicking like you get when the battery is flat.

Then - as if nothing is wrong it will start and run as normal. Does not appear to matter if the van has been running for a while or left overnight before starting, and seems random as to when it occurs.

When the van is running it is fine.

3 days ago I did go through a ford, - was wondering if this may have got water into some electrical joint or connection.

What could be the problem, would it be something to do with the starter motor - or the battery or anything else ?

Thanks

Gerry

Possibility a starter issue may be worth bench testing it or next time it does it put a direct live to the trigger on the starter and see what happens that will easily rule that out then.

Also check charge voltage as well as check condition of all earth wires
