Transit seats in the back

Postby SpotlessWales » Sat May 18, 2013 3:08 pm

Hi guys

Is this easy to do?

I went to one place who said he wouldn't take it on incase I had an accident and police asked who fitted them.

And that the whole floor would need taking up

Is it easy to do?

I bought and fitted a twin seat in the back of my '51 reg transit. Seat belts were part of the seat, which makes it easier. I fixed it in with 1/2" diam. bolts and 2" washers underneath. Make sure before you start drilling that you are missing the chassis.
Insurance co. asked me to have it checked by a garage and for them to verify that it was secure (they wrote a letter).
As I never changed the V5 doc., whenever I took it for MOT they said that they would ignore the seat. If I had an accident, I would have to say that I had fitted the seat since the last MOT.
To do it all legitimately, I was told that I would need an engineers report to state that all was safe, though I chose not to take this route.
Good luck and remember to measure twice and drill once.

Seats have to be rated now (something like M2) basically the whole structure had to withstand a 2 ton pull. My Tourneo seats weigh 90kg each, with some serious metal frames in them. My last van I had same as you, and made a metal frame that bolted from underneath to spread the load in case of an accident. It is a problem now, which is why I bought a tourneo and made it look like a van, rather than a van with added seats. Unlikely anyone would "legitimately" fit one for you due to liability. End of day you have to consider safety if you have a big accident.

I think it's just any seats you plan to carry passengers in while driving.

hi spotless, it can be done. i took my double front seat and used it in the back. for me it involved removing the origanal underframe and fabricating a box section base so that the area under the seat was usable. i had to mount one inertia reel seat belt on the side wall of van as the twin front seat only has one belt built in. i agree it is a minefield but as it stands my van has had 3 mot's since that was done and has passeed. my insurance company seem happy with that and the van is insured to carry 4. the v5 shows that. if engineers reports are required i dont see that they are any more valid than an mot... there are so many variables not least the quality of work and welding which can only be checked realistically bt load type tests. for one off jobs how do you acheive that???
As you seemed to be implying when you asked should you remove the bed there are a lot of things we do and fit to vehicles both internally and externally that could pose significant threat if not done properly..... do we want to be in a position where we are prohibited from any modifications....???/
if it was me i would do whatever you want doing either yourself or find someone who will and get it checked by the right authority ie an mot inspector...
good luck regards andy

Can't carry passengers in them less they are rated, cost is about £1200 for a proper rock n roll seat like the RIB ones.

i done one for a neighbour last year drilled the floor went and bought a length of steel flat 6mm X 30 mm X 3 meters length it was about £4 and cut it up into 300mm lengths and drilled it and fitted it under the floor with M8 bolts and nylok nuts so that they could not vibrate loose there is no way this would ever pull through a floor not even a rotten one and when she rung her insurance they said she needed to get it checked by an mot station but we were very lucky as she only had 3 weeks mot left so we booked it in for an mot and it passed straight away so we photo copied the mot certificate and sent it to them and they accepted it hope this helps

I wanted a triple seat on rails that I could slide the full length of the van for multi purposes/ rock and roll seat.
I guess that's out of the window lol.
the boss has a double that comes out quickly, perhaps if he has assign accident he can throw the seat out quickly?
