Postby johnknox » Mon May 20, 2013 5:31 pm

Hi does anybody know where the engine vin number plate is on a mk6 durotorq DI is? Or even how to find out if my vehicle has had a engine change in the past?

Is there any identity number on the engine itself?

Yes, on rear wheel drives there is a sticker on the top left of the timing cover. It has engine part number and build date.

Additionally there should be an area on the block with the engine serial number stamped on it, opposite side to the oil filter and similarly low down towards the back of the engine. Space is left on the block to stamp the vehicle vin if the engine is replaced.

That's all according to etis, real life may vary....

Front wheel drive is probably similar, the engine number will be on the back of the block since the oil filter is on the front.

mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

On further reading.....

Apparently for the fwd 2.0l it is on the timing chain housing adjacent to the fuel pump, so on the front but not necessarily any easier to see !

Same pattern to the numbers,
4 digit code for engine type
5 digit serial number
there should also be 2 letters to identify year and month of build.
I don't have the decode info for the build date.

Engine type codes for 2.0l are
D3FA - 75ps TDDi
ABFA - 100ps TDDi
FIFA - 125ps TDCi
