mk7 2.4 leaking water pump housing ADVICE PLS

just found a drip looked up from underside can see it leaking from between the pump and the plastic housing to the rear of it


ok my first thing is to pop to fords for a new gasket but it looks fiddly to do, so do you have to remove the whole pump to do it? from the top you can hardly see it underside a little clearer but its up high.


any heads up greatly appreciated, ill use the oppertunity to flush the coolant and renew

hi just put a new water pump on my mk6 135 it was leeking out of the tell tail hole as for the plastic housing it has a o ring on it not a gaskett it is not a bad job to fit new pump all i did was remove turbo to intercooler hose vac pump and all the water hoses the only bad part about the job is geting the hose clips off but i put it back together with jubiley clips insted was not going to pay £25 for a set of plyers to remove the old clips

That is gonna be my route bought a o ring from fords today.


But climbed under with a t30 to test tightness of bolts I think I've nipped it, noticed today it stopped dripping after warmed up so must of been v slight.

I'll keep an eye on it any doubt and ill rip it all out,

Hi Lee Keep an eye on it had a 07 mk7 jumbo with a slight water drip between pump and block tried tightening it ended up using rad weld held for about 6months then rad welded it again then forgot about it and she cooked on me on day ( they are suppose to go on limp mode when too hot. my one didnt) put coolant in it that day she was ok about two weeks later she started pressurising, after taking her apart skimming head, new gasket and putting her together, same problem.The head was cracked those first mk7 2.4 heads are made of alu foil, its a common enough problem if you are in doubt change pump save yourself a load of grief. It's only the plastic housing on rear of pump were it bolts to it.


Ill do a Coolant flush and change anyway, as for rad weld etc it blocks everything up over time mate

I have a spare good pump here if your needing anything off it, i renewed it for piece of mind after fitting a new head.

You want your van to be 110% if you rely on it, especially if your hundreds of miles from home!!

cheers mate to be fair im the same but was a little drip that sorted with just a little nip up.


as for 100s miles away I know that one too well hence I now have breakdown cover lol

so .....egr off and boost pipe out the way all the water hoses off rear of pump and remove the pump with the vac pump still attached>?

Haha snap, i have AA cover. Does standard AA cover picking up a recovery truck though!??

Obv remove aux belt, then take vac pipe out vaccum pump and as many hoses off water pump as you can whilst its in place, then remove 4 10mm bolts holding complete unit and remove final lower coolant pipe once pump is unbolted (better access).

Thats all i can remember from doing mine!

Cheers, no aa have a 18ft length restriction! As do rac and green flag etc

I seem to have a leak in the exact same place. Seems to be coming from the place where the plastic meets the water pump. Any idea what size of O ring it takes?

It almost looks like it might be possible to just take off the plastic piece using a T30 and replace the O ring.

That is correct but from memory I tried that leaked again so I changed the housing

Thanks for letting me know. I'll probably still try the O ring first because I'm in New Zealand and the mechanic said that the plastic parts cost about $400 NZD.

Looks like it can be ordered online from the UK for about 75 pounds and that includes the water pump!
