Ford Transit motorhome

Postby MEES » Thu May 16, 2013 5:10 pm

We have just aborted our holiday in our motorhome. :x
It is based on a Ford transit 2.4TDi . We bought it 'new' 3 years ago but think the chassis might be 2007
It has twin wheels at the back.
I quied rumbling apparently from the back got a lot louder particularly when going slowly.
A German garage replaced a front wheelbearing -has made no difference. £200
they had a fairly quick look at the back wheels and didnt think the back bearing were a problem.
has anyone any ideas?

2.4tdi...rear wheel drive for sure as it's twin wheels axle...differential unit failed by sounds of it... not the worst thing to happen i may add

why did they fit a front wheel bearing when the noise was at the rear?? germans... maybe thought it was VW lol

Anyways some garage eh!.... rumbling....at rear on a twin wheel axle...why did they not even check the Diff.... :?

I'll go with the diff also. Years ago, they used to put sawdust in em with the oil to quiet them down whilst for sale.

sawdust is probably still used a lot in rear diffs.... does no damage & does work well, done it to a few mk4 pick ups

I used to use nylon stockings back in the day, not tights, the crutch area could cause problems. The nylon breaks down and forms a thick jelly sort of paste. No axle noise then.

Thanks guys will get VIN number tomorrow
if it is the differencial any idea of cost involved?
My limited expeience with cars I once had wheel bearing go and the sound is similar to that more high pitched and quieter on motorway almost inaudible then on slow work low rumbling,
Husband has had wheels off and checked tyres -nothing obvious.

The VIN number for our rumbling motorhome is WFOFXXTTFF 7 J61810 Any ideas and if poss idea of cost to repair.

We have already (stupidly) shelled out £200+ if germany for a front wheel bearing which clearly was not the problem and pRobably didnt need doing :(

Thanks for all your help

The vehicle is a motorhome and has presumably done a much lower mileage and far easier life than a normal Transit. Should a diff fail at a low mileage or indeed any propshaft bearing? The owner describes a noise like a wheel bearing issue which gets quieter on the motorway but at lower speeds a rumble.

A diff can whine and rumble but so can a bearing so unless anyone else has any ideas it doesn't look as though we can take this problem any further forward.

I presume the original poster is not interested in getting second hand parts so has anyone any idea how much it would cost to replace/repair the diff or the propshaft bearing with any idea on labour times. I've done neither so can't help.

Thanks everyone for your advice so far at least we have a lot more information for when it goes to garage on Monday.
Its done 20,000 miles and will have had longer periods of 'standing' both before we bought it and since than most transits i suspect.

Hi. My Transit 125/ 350 with twin rear wheels on each side failed last Friday. Sheared 5 of the six rear wheel studs (see my post added today 20th). Check wheel nuts are tight (especially if you use hub trim covers and cannot keep a regular visual eye on the nuts). Rds, Ian.
