Alternator over charging

Postby BGK » Sun May 19, 2013 7:23 pm

My MK6 on 05 plate 2l TD is charging at 15 volts constantly no bulbs blowing or trouble with standard equipment but has blown multi media player Graphics chip twice now. Is this normal charging rate! if not will i need to change alternator and or fix voltage regulator in line to future new player.
Cheers everyone help much needed. :!:

My Alternator puts out 14.8v. An auto electrical shop will usually test for free.

14.7V to 14.8V is normal, 15V is a bit high. It depends what meter you used to test it, the accuracy of some of the cheaper ones is not that good.

Any item designed to run in a car off 12v should be able to handle the 15v (or so).

Items not intended for 12v car use (some TVs and MP3 players etc) will need a stabilised power supply that gives 12v or things go pop.

You can get a 5 amp 12v to 12v regulated supply that will handle up to 36v input for about £10.
