VP30 diesel pump removal

Postby sausagenmash » Mon Mar 18, 2013 3:45 pm

Hi all,
I'm looking for a 'how-to' guide to help me in the removal of my diesel pump from my 90bhp 2.4duratorq. When I enter the phrase ' diesel pump removal ' in the search bar, I'm getting every thread that ever used any of those 3 words, but crucially, not in the same sentence :?
After all I've read about these problematic pumps, I'm sure there's a guide on here somewhere for the less talented of us to make use of? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.. Pete.

From where I think you are...
Remove the injector pipes
Remove FIP cover on timing case
Insert sprocket holding tool.
Remove 4 x 10mm bolts on sprocket
Remove 3 x T45 pump retaining bolts.
Take pump out

Thanks for the help Dan (again :) )
Not sure what you mean by fip cover tho mate, (is that the front engine cover?) and the sprocket holding tool, I guess I'll have to buy a kit - I saw a clip on you tube of someone using drill bits to lock off the sprockets tho when they were setting up the timing..? ... If I'm just removing the pump for as long as it takes to swap the fuel solenoid and then pop it straight back on, is it necessary to lock off the cam sprockets and drop a locking pin into the crank sensor hole? also , if I buy a kit will it have something in it to lock off the pump itself to prevent that from turning? As you can guess, I'm in way over my head here but I'm broke and the van being off the road is the last thing I need right now. Your advice is much appreciated mate.. Pete.

I think FIP stands for fuel injection pump :D

in the front timing cover there is a circular inspection plate that twists slightly to remove, you do not have to remove the whole cover to remove the pump although you do need the pump sprocket holding tool to remove pump that way

Is the sprocket Holding tool mentioned above in this box :http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Mondeo-Transit-Engine-Timing-Tool-Set-Kit-2-0-2-4-Tddi-Tdci-Diesel-3133-/261198720251?pt=UK_Measuring_Tools_Levels&hash=item3cd0a82cfb&clk_rvr_id=482227504238&afsrc=1

Yes the holding tool is the round one on the right, the one on the left is to remove the inspection cover from the front of the engine, in order to use the holding tool, and the three short pins in the middle go through the holding tool to stop it slipping off after you undo the pump bolts, but before you undo the sproket bolts

APH,
so here is my understanding, please correct me if iam wrong,
1.Remove pump inspection cover (not the whole timing chain cover ) by twisting using the one of the tools on the left
2. Remove the three Torx pump bolts holding the pump to engine ( do these bolts come out through inspection cover or on the pump side ?)
3.Inset the holding tool (not sure which side goes first, one with 3 black plates or the other ) through the inspection hole to hold the pump sproket.
4.Inset the three short pins through the Holding tool to pump sproket ( do these pins go all the way through into space left by three Torx on engine block?)
5.remove 4 bolts holding the pump on the sproket
6.pump removed

Yup thats about it, but here it is in more deatil for you

1. Use tool on left to remove inspection cover by inserting the three pegs into the three holes on cover, turn a quarter turn anticlockwise and remove cover plate.
2. Leave rear pump to engine mounting bracket done up at this point, turn engine over clockwise using crank pulley bolts and a spanner until the pump timing pin lines up (6 mm pin or drill bit) there is a hole in the offset middle of the sprocket, and it lines up with a slot in pump shaft which in turn should line up with a hole in the engine behind the sprocket when all is correctly positioned. Also the little recess hole on the outer edge of the sprocket near the teeth should be at about the 2 o'clock position
3. When correctly aligned, so as timing pin can be inserted, the three bigger holes through the edge of the sprocket, should line up with the three pump torx bolts behind.
4. Insert the holding tool on the right, back bits towards sprocket, if you look at it you'll see it engages the timing cover and twists in to place just like the cover plate did, so turn it to hold it to the cover, and as you do so, the three holes giving access to the torx bolts, should align with three holes in the holding tool. Then using a long (t50 i think) torx bit inserted through the holes, you should be able to undo the pump bolts. (yes they go through from inside the timing cover behind the sprocket, towards the pump) They will NOT be able to fall out or be removed from the engine, but MUST be undone fully. Remove the timing pin if this is still inserted.
5. Insert the three short locking pins in the kit, into the three holes in the tool and through into the three holes in the sprocket, dont push them in all the way, they will just sit there loosly.
6. Undo the 4 sprocket to pump mounting bolts and remove them completely, they should be accessible through the holding tool.
7. remove the rear monting bracket on the pump holding it to the engine block (by the injection pipes) and then pull the pump out streight away from the timing cover, being carefull not to catch the big centre shaft nut on the sprocket and nock it out of alignment.

8. re fit is a reverse of the above, make sure the pump is Loosly bolted to its rear bracket, BUT before inserting the sprocket bolts, rotate the pump using the big centre shaft nut, untill the slot in the edge of the pump shaft aligns with the timing holes as mentioned above. You should be able to insert the timing pin to make sure / hold it there untill you tighten the sprocket bolts. Then insert the sprocket bolts and tighten, remove timing pin, sprocket holding pins from kit, tighten pump torx bolts, and continue in reverse from there. DO NOT tighten the rear bracket until you have checked the timing pin still goes in ok, if so tighten everything up.

After finishing replacing everything, and before you fit the inspection cover, rotate engine 2 full turns using the crank pulley, and then check that the timing pin goes in on the pump once again (very slight jiggling left and right of the pump might be needed, so long as it looks aligned you'll be ok.) Fit cover, keep fingers crossed

Do you need to time the engine up and lock crank or not
