Ignition key is disconnecting powers once a while

Postby pp5858 » Mon Aug 29, 2016 6:21 am

I have an issue on my MK7 that ignition key seems to move a bit up and down and it may disconnect electricity while even driving.

So If I fit key nicely and gently turn it might work well, but usually it takes few tries to get car started so that the electricity is on and it will actually run.

Does anyone have ideas what is the problem or how I could investigate what needs to be changed.

I have IDS and VCM 2 so if some change is easy and cheap to get rid of it, I could do that.

Ignition switch is a common problem on these.

+1. Also it's not difficult to replace or expensive.

Tnx for info.

Is there thread for changing it how would it happen or quick list/order what to do?

Do I purchase it as new or is second hand also possible and can I keep the same key mechanics / keys?

Yes it is a DIY job, no new barrel or key required, just remove and change the switch on the back :D

btw. Switched this part, easy change and corrected the issues as expected.

Though now (half a year after I changed that or so) have issues that there is some miss alingment or so on the key. Not exactly sure but when I got my car back from my wife, she complained some beeping issues with the car and lights on the dashboard even after the key has been taken out.

When I got to car to try to start it, there were some lights light on the dashboard and could not turn the key so that it would start. After a while I got it started but when I turned it of there was horn or something loud noice.

And after a while it went even worse, I could not shut down the engine, but instead the key turned off, car was running and the horn noise was there.

In the end I had to take the battery - cables out, put it in a gear and stall the engine to stop it.

Still haven't had time too look what is really wrong with the car.

It sounds like the new switch has failed :?

+1

Also make sure the key and barrel aren't over worn/sloppy, i bet that won't help the switch especially if there's lots of keys on the keyring weighing it down.

Hmm, quite didn't yet figure out what was the issue but managed to get it fixed.

Probably it is the switch some how but now it works fully. Have to look more detailed during the weekend and see it more detailed if I could figure out why it did that.

I'll still reply to this even months old. So I didn't know exactly then how or what I fixed and even now dont know. :o

So It was some how misaligned and I think I just turned it back and forth or so and once it got aligned it has stayed there. Plus, I've been the only one driving it since. ;) Not blaiming anyone but....
