Engine, gearbox & rear diff oils

Postby Andy133 » Tue Aug 22, 2017 5:41 pm

Evening Gents,

Purchase a 51plate mwb, semi high roof, 133000 on clock. I'm after some help on the correct oils for the above subject I use shells lube match and suggest 5w30, does this sound right? Does anyone know the correct oils for the gearbox & rear diff?

Van details in signature. Thanks for your help.

gearbox is 75W90 2.4L for a refill, diff is 3 litres of 75W140 if memory serves. you can also use 85W140 if you are on a budget as that is usually cheaper and makes the axle a bit less whiney.

just fill until it comes out of the fill hole.

pro tip: open the fill hole first. if you run into problems with getting the bolt out you at least have oil in it. if you drain it first and you cant get the fill bolt out you have that thing with a creek and no paddle...

According to Waynes manual.

2.4/ 5 speed transmission 1.3 Ltrs (though this seems very little to me, says 2.25Ltr for FWD ) Ford specWSD- M2C200-C someone suggested this was besthttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RED-LINE-MTL- ... xyUgtTKxO5

Rear axle 2.6 Ltrs SAE 90W/140 Ford spec. WSL-M2C192-A

This is the stuff I now have in my MT82 6sp box...works really well too, no more difficult changes when cold and no more synchro nibbles when changing gears.

W90 in the rear diff is not wise. it will make horrible noises and way too thin when the diff gets hot. W140 is the minimum. if you can get it cheap you should use 85 or 90W140, but certainly nothing thinner.

Question for you Oil Guru's :D

Some of these multigrades can be quite expensive....they are claimed to be "Life Long" & you still end up replacing them....as far as the diff is concerned, if you can get EP90 free, on a regular basis, why would.'t you use it & just change it regular :?:

Take account of the fact that I've not looked at a material data sheet & checked the viscosity of 90W140 but c'mon guy's....EP90 & a couple of shovels of sawdust fixed most things when I were a lad. 8)

"Lifetime" is slang for "1 week after the warranty expires".

99% of oils and fluids have a working lifespan of about 3 years, 5 if you really stretch it with high micron filters. After this time the product will lose its properties and degrade. Does not matter if it is engine oil or brake fluid. Everything needs to be replaced after that time. The company is only interested in covering their asses until the warranty expires.

Bungee cord is also sold with a lifetime warranty....

Having drained the rear diff on my d22 Navara the oil was black and stank and really thin and I kept to what was the certain number of miles by manufacturer, I decide I would change it every 6000 miles, start changing engine oil & filter every 3000. Changed the gearbox oil in April this year with 98000 on clock and it was horrendous. I wouldn't believe the lifetime mantra.

new oil does not smell so bad because the sulfur is "sealed" inside the oil. after a while the oil breaks down and the sulfur is released in all its glory for your nostrils to enjoy.

if you think normal 75W90 is bad then try oils for LSD's, that stuff will make you trow chunks across the garage if it catches you off guard.

Oh I see....sealed for life compartments is not working for me either. :)

I've had a vision that the way extended service intervals are going, at some point in the future there will be an engine sump capacity of 55 ltr & service intervals of 100K miles....you have your first service on the day your warranty expires.

such intervals als pretty normal for trucks (the big ones). they have a service interval of about 70~80k miles. but they have ~40 litres of oil and 3~5 oil filters that hold 3 litres each.
