egr mil light

Postby lofty531135 » Mon Jan 22, 2018 9:40 pm

Hi.

I have a 2009 mk7 Transit with 180000 on the clock, it is a T300.

The van runs fine but I have an mot coming up in March so need to get it sorted.

A few months ago my mil light came on and when I read the codes it was egr valve fault, it has water cooling, I replaced the egr valve and about 2 weeks later the mil light returned.

The error codes are P1402, P1103.

I disconnected the egr valve connector and put a black multi meter wire on the earth of the van body and with the ignition on but engine not running I put the red probe on the number 1 wire of the egr connector which is supposed to be 12v, there was no voltage so i tried the rest of the wires and no 12v, forgot to say that I get 4.9v on the number 4 wire.

My question is does anyone know if there is a fuse for the power to the egr valve and if so could somebody please tell me, I have been searching about a month online and I have looked through the handbook for the fuse identification but there is nothing related to the egr.

Cheers.
Ian.

The EGR is controlled by the PCM...the P1103 code is a MAF sensor out of range fault...pretty common in conjunction with EGR faults.

I'd be checking the loom for the EGR first, check for continuity/breaks etc...

Hi Guys.

Thanks for replying, are you saying go back to the pcm to check for breaks because I do not know where the wires connect to in the pcm.

Cheers.

A lot will depend on if there is a break... and where it is. You may have to go all the way back to the PCM though...Just follow the wire colours from EGR plug/connector to PCM, just check to see if you have continuity from one end to the other.

I went back to the connector on the pcm and i put a wire piercing probe on one of the 5 wires and I removed the multi plug on the egr valve and probed that paticular connection and tested each wire this way and there are no breaks in any wire, they made a continuity signal.

I then tested pin 1 which is to supply the 12v for the motor and the reading was 1.16v.

Cheers.

Maybe a faulty ( new ) EGR, especially if its a pattern unit. It's not unheard of.

It isn't a ford part, Shouldn't I be getting a 12v feed from the ecu to open and close the motor.

Ok. Never needed to test the feeds myself as usually the valve itself is the culprit. I have a spare i plug in temporarily.

I believe its a PWM signal that modulates the motor so not a solid constant voltage.

Just go for the cheapest one of the right type on ebay , They are all much of a muchness quality wise.

If you like you can bypass the water cooling if you fancy with a piece of pipe and some hose clips as the water cooled pattern ones are no more reliable than non water cooled. Non water cooled ones may be cheaper.
