Mk6 running/starting issues

Postby Honda415 » Sat Feb 03, 2018 8:53 pm

Hello you lovely bunch of tranny owners. Here we go hope you can point me in the right direction. Bought my mk6 jumbo 140000miles last thursday. Drove it home but it was very underpowered even though she was empty. She had no guts up hills and would top out at 75mph. My mate following me said she was smokey to start with but it was very dark so couldnt see the colour. But it cleared up by the time i drove the 70miles home. There were no warning lights of any kind. Went to start this morning cold and she fired straight away but then cut out immediatly after starting. But if i revved it while starting it was fine. Also if i pump the gas pedal 3 times before i start it shes also fine. Apart from giving it a good service initially is there anything else i should be aware/scared of?

A good service including the fuel filter and possibly blank the egr off. N

The only thing pumping the throttle when starting will give you is a sore leg  as its electronic and dosent work till the engine is running. As Ned says a good service and check the boost pipe between the inlet manifold and intercooler at the bend

Ive heard rumours of timing chain tensioner failures. Would this be a symptom?
If i blank the egr would this not bring an engine management light on?
I understand that the throttle pedal pump issue but it works! If i turn on wait for glow plug to go out and start she starts fine then stalls immediatly. But if i turn on pump the pedal then start she wont stall.
Also the lack of power issue has me worried. Thank you for the comments so far

As long as you leave any sensors plugged in to the egr then you can blank it off in the mk6, but be aware the new mot rules about this, so its only temporary to see if it works better  which it will cos the egr is evil.

Does the timing chain rattle? Have you got any service history with the van?

A good service air, oil & fuel filters, new oil, glow plugs if your feeling brave, inspection of all boost pipes and check the turbo inners for scoring/movement, that what I would do first.

Remember this is a TDDI so not going to be as quick as modern diesels. N

Update on the issue so far had a chance to look at it today and while trying to clean the old oil away to trace the leak i found a split in the pipe that goes from the bottom of the intercooler onto the intake with a plug on the intercooler end. Anyone aware of its technical name or a part number? Is it a ford only part? bearing im mind its the rwd model

Its called a boost pipe as somebody mentioned in the third post  I used to be only available from Ford and comes with the map sensor and is an expensive bit of pipe :(

I think this is the earlier hose than yours and has a bigger internal diameter than yours at the egr end but I have seen where people leave a piece of the old hose on the egr and slide the new hose over it and fit a larger hose clip :idea:https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-TRANSIT ... it doesnt matter if you have the big egr or the smaller. take off pipe and clean it, then really good duct tape will fix it-itll even pass the test like that.
hole in that pipe will make it smokey and slow

Mine has a sensor in the lower end and appears more plastic than rubber but gonna see if i can measure up and patch it for now with some silicone hose.
