Alternator fault i've not seen before

Postby cphaza » Sun Feb 18, 2018 10:27 pm

Hi guys

Got a strange one with a late mk6 2006 2.4. The battery isnt charging but i have no battery light. When i say no battery light i mean nothing at any time - ignition on engine off, engine on, idle, at revs - no light and no charge. Has anyone come across this before ? I have tried taking the plug off the back of the alternator to 'disconnect' from the smart charging system to get it to run like a normal system - still no joy. Anyone got any ideas? Posted this else where on the site, hopefully this is in the right section now!

Cheers

Could be as simple as the bulb blown in the cluster,
Or,the RWD mk6 has a few fuses and relays in the charging system,or broken wire to the 3 pin smart charge plug.

Have you done any work to it recently ?
There's a main feed to alternator which comes from main starter terminal, people have been known to miss this wire after starter motor work.....

Possible faulty earth cable. It has a fusible link, overtime the metal can fatigue and loose charge. You can test by earthing your battery negative terminal to the chassis.

The van is starting so wont be the fusible link
Op have you checked the alternator for power at the connections :?: The wiring over the timing cover can break

also check the wiring that runs from the alternator across the top of the engine, thats held by the plastic cover, wires can fray due to vibration.
