200ps crank pulley

Postby STEVE P » Sun Feb 25, 2018 2:56 pm

I have just replaced the crank pulley on my 200ps, not that an unusual problem from what I gather but this is the second one in 85k

The first one was replaced while the van was under warranty and it had not even covered 25k at the time, I was told by the dealer the new one was up rated as they had been problems. I suppose 60k is a lot better than 25k for the second one but I have never replaced a crank pulley on any vehicle in past so why are these engines so heavy on pulleys and what can I do to stop it happening again?

Ford wanted nearly £200 for a new one but I found a company making them for under £100 with a 2 year warranty, hopefully I wont regret it.

Looking at the one that came off the problem seems the drive part is clamped against the rubber so acting like a clutch, why does a drive pulley need to be damped?

Yeah, it's pretty common on our tranny's unfortunately especially the RWD's, I had my 2.4 RWD Mk7 drop it's pulley on my driveway one morning a couple of years ago. I believe the reason they need to be dampened is just to help dampen the vibrations produced by the crank/combustion, as I understand it, most diesel engines have them, even some petrol engines have them....If they didn't, you'd be replacing a lot of other things in the engine other than the pulley, I guess it's the lesser of two evils and is possibly used as a designed "failing point" maybe...??

Just my take on it... I stand corrected as usual.

The pulley is glued to the rubber so I'm surprised they last at all Lol.

You have the pulley on 1 end then the dmf in the middle then the rubber donut on the prop (rwd) seems that to keep engine and gearbox wear to a minimum they decided this is the way to go.

EBay items that are classed as genuine would be taken with a pinch of salt if they don't come in Ford packaging or have Ford markings on then or look good quality. Generally. :-)
