Alloy wheels and tyres

Postby mhp932 » Wed Mar 21, 2018 9:54 pm

Hi All, will fitting larger alloys and tyres give a quieter ride than the 15" steel wheels on the van now, I removed the bulkhead and the drone from the road noise when cornering is really annoying, don't think it's a bearing fault as it's ok in a straight line ,what size alloys & tyres best suits a transit,
thanks in advance, never purchased alloys before

A lot will depend on the individual tyre choice, but I doubt it will be quieter.

16” for practicality and wear, 18” or bigger for looks, but you’ll be lucky to see much over 12k out a set of fronts!

Lining insulation and deadening in the back will make the biggest difference to noise if you've removed the bulkhead, otherwise it's just a big tin box your rattling around in
Ever heard the difference between an empty or full biscuit tin when you bang one?

Droning round corners is fooked wheelbearings. Guaranteed
And fitting alloys will worsen your wheelbearing problem

Will be getting it sound proofed, insulated & lined, it's just had a full service, would the bearings have been checked as part of that, will check paperwork tonight and phone garage

On my Mk6 Tourneo 2,0 tdci genuine tyre size is 195/65R16 and in winter I use this size tyres with alloys 5,5Jx16. But for summer I use tyres 215/60R16 with alloys 6,5Jx16.
And problem is in summer time: fuel consumption is bigger 1,0 - 1,5 l/100km (280 - 420 mpg) than with narrower winter tyres, max. speed is about 10 - 15km/h lower. I'm experienced in it with 200.000 miles.
So: wide tyres it is safer driving and nice looking van - but visibly higher costs and lower performance.

For the bearings to show during a service they'd have to be obviously farked. Front ones tend to rumble when a bit of load comes off i.e. inside one when turning a corner.

So is your Tourneo quiet on the road in both winter and summer with it being a factory fitted out minibus

What tyres are on your van now, I have had some that rumble like mad, when you buy tyres it usually tells you the db noise, also having 4 matching tyres (make & tread) makes a difference. N
