had a similar problem. battery light was flashing on and off, if I dropped into 2nd and reved it disapeared, took it into garage and they said I needed a new alternator belt, got one fitted and problem went.

same thing about 3 months later and after about 3 days of driving the light came on permanently - van was still fine for a week - should`ve taken it to a garage but I was at the top of the mountains doing a ski season.
transit eventually packed in - cut out completely and had to be towed. All down to the alternator packing in. cost me 570E i the end so would def get your alternator checked out properly.

Had this with light flashing, flashes less often when revved up, usually one way clutch on front pulley of alternator failing, not generating enough charge to put out lamp.
Remove fanbelt, put something thru front of alternator to wedge internal fan blades & lock alternator, turn pulley by hand it should then only turn 1 way, locking solid when turning the other.
If it spins both ways, alternator clutch is u/s not transmitting drive.

Was it flashing with some sort of pattern,if so prob. clutch assy,if flickering/no pattern to it could be wiring fault/rubbed thru somewhere.
I`ve seen the pins corrode at the 3 pin connector & wiring rub/break over the plastic cover on top front of engine.
Squeaking is usually just the belt getting worn.
Check the belt auto tensioner above alternator though, the bearing fails & throws the belt off which can then jam behind P.A.S pump pulley & fill alternator
You can usually see when its on its way out cos belt starts running towards front of pulley & there`ll be a "shiny" area where it used to run.Belt should be level with rear edge of pulley thereabouts.
