My first thought is timing chain tensioner (was what caused mine to do this), when it fires does it sound really rattly in the second or so before it stalls :?: If so then tensioner is a definate culprit (when chain is slack pump timing is out to crank timing, causing ECU to kill engine). Also when did it last have an oil change :?:

Hello welcome to site, mine 54 plate 350 lwb. Have problem starting mine, took it to Ford they found faulty fuel housing sucking in air so mine would not start at all until they changed it. Also burnt fuse relay to glow plugs at the same time. After advice from this site i told ford to disconnect cold start system (glow plugs) van will start with persistance. Not saying that yours has same cause or faulty parts. Read post on problems starting Direct injection engines and that will give you some ideas
of what your looking for.

I am trying to keep my nerve and not spend unecessary funds, spring will be here soon and we will be all driving without a hitch! :)

Very unlikely to be air ingress if it starts ok then stalls, air ingress or low pump pressure or slow cranking etc will usually always lead to no start at all or very slow to start, but once started it will stay running.......still sounds more like chain tensioner, just my opinion though

Yeah timing out, could still be out even if no rattle, as is possible for crank to be out and tensioner ok or stuck out.

Enough Air ingress that can cause a problem, that normally means a lot of cranking after been stood over night, or a few hours...

Also with no glow plugs connected and no other issues it should start up just about the same instantly.

Take the glow plug relay out, (top left big grey one) you might find that will be enough to allow the engine to fire up and stay running till you sort the problem.

Will tell you it's timing related not fuel/air.
