And the moral of the story is, that the reason the usual answers given to FWD gear change queries are 'gear cables' is because the problem is usually the gear cables

Cables are sometimes the problem, but very often the selector shaft in the top of the turret on the gearbox partialy siezes, making changes difficult. The turret can be removed with the box in situ and the offending little bearing can be changed (costs about £7). It's not quite as easy to do as I've made it sound but an amazing amount of mechanics seem totally unaware of this problem.

ok gents what exactly goes wrong with the cables please
is it that they compress under pressure as you go to change gear or that they get shorter over time due to the cables compressing

I noticed that a tiny piece of the orange plastic had snapped off in the socket that clips onto the gearbox selector, still a tight fit but as I had a problem and knew it wasn't the selector then the cable was my 1st item to change. I can see how the cable will get compressed as its gradually been getting worse over the 80k I've had the van and you end up forcing it harder every time, as for the selector bearing- ford had the cheek to tell me it was not available seperatly and could not be changed!!

Ive noticed similar issues with my newly aquired Mk6 FWD. The previous owner said he had issues with it sometimes jumping out of 1st when lifting off the clutch and ive managed to do this twice already too. Same sort of symptoms, gear changes feel notchy in all gears and I always have 2 shots at getting 1st. There is definately a 'notch' that I can feel going into first and if I dont push past that point then it wont engage properly.
