****IMPORTANT**** transits being stolen ****Must Read****

Postby matg » Thu Mar 01, 2012 11:37 pm

In the early hours of Wednesday morning my LWB transit was stolen, I have both keys and I know it was locked (I'm very particular about security and ensuring its locked). The next morning It was gone, no broken glass, no sign it was ever there :(

Police came out and I spoke to the insurance and they said it was strange that the van had gone as I had the keys, so I was a little worried about them paying out.

Tonight I have had another visit from the police and mine was 1 of 8 transits taken in the same way over the last 2 days  it seems there is a way around the security and they are driving the vehicles off.

Mine is a 06 mk7 GLX in silver

Not sure what you could do to protect yours other than block it in and be more vigilant. They are not just after the tools, the police think they are stripping them for parts. It seems they are targeting smaller businesses or non sign written vehicles as they may not have trackers fitted.

If cheap mk7/mk6 parts turn up from the west midlands area this could be where they are coming from. I've had thousands of pounds worth of tools and materials stolen, please don't let this happen to you.

Please pass it on to as many people as you can.

Hi, any more information on how it was stolen ?

I thought the new transit was supposed to be very secure.

My Mk 7 is the love of my life.

It is fully alarmed, but am now wondering, how to increase the security on it.

I had the complete front of my last Transit stolen when parked in my drive.

xxx

Hmmm....more mk7 going this way, according to a mate of mine who is an auto locksmith, it is very easy to get in these vehicles without forcing entry if they are just factory secured, and there is a loophole in the security of the immobiliser which with a simple plug in box will allow any key that can be made to turn the ignition (lock pick for example) start the van no problem apparantly the hole kit is easily obtainable from online sources and cost very little

This does not seem to apply to mk6 vans as of yet, they are still secure. He is in the process of getting a full report put together and video proof to present to Fords, as they are currenty refusing to accept this is even a possibilty...however evidence is now showing that they definately over engineered the electronics on the mk7....and made a gleeming error in the process

He says the only real way to secure them is to fit extra security locks to prevent the doors being opened even if the ford locks are undone, and add an extra immobiliser, although not completely foolproof, it will slow down a thief who is trying the easy method, and they probably wont bother if its gonna take too long to do.

I have an Insurance approved steering wheel security lock that covers the complete steering wheel, that I fit every night when I park up..

The way things are these days, if someone wants your vehicle they will take it, all that you can do is make it as hard as possible, and make it more time comsuming, so hopefully they wont bother.........

Just to try and balance out the paranoia. The Transit is very secure compared to other vans, but because it's still the most popular van, more of them will be stolen. The vans that get stolen are the easy targets, un alarmed, parked tucked away out of sight, non standard ones with bling. You know what your area is like, so you need to be proactive.

Yes there is a tool that will get you into the van, so if you have expensive tools then put decent (not the cheapest you can find!) locks on or take the tools out.

Sign writing is a twin edged sword, it makes it less likely to be stolen BUT it can indicate what goodies may be inside.

I wish there was a like button on this forum as I'd like the above dog related posts. I have "Beware of the dog" stickers on both my vans (Peugeot Partner and Mk6 Tranny) and my big black mongrel (looks similar to a GSD) is usually inside whichever one I'm driving.

But I've become a bit complacent about security so thanks for the heads up, I've got a steering wheel lock and a wheel clamp for a trailer which I don't really use so I will start using those regularly now although not sure if the wheel clamp will fit the Tranny wheels so might have to use the steering wheel lock on the Tranny and the wheel clamp on the Partner. There's no sign writing on either van (both are personal use only) although the Partner has paw prints all over it, so I might do the same for the Tranny.

A few years ago I managed to lock my keys, phone, purse and dog in the Partner and was about to have a major panic when a young lad told me not to worry, he could get into it with a bit of packing strip plastic. And he did, in about 30 seconds - he apologised for it taking so long! He said he was out of practice and he used to be able to do it in about 10 seconds. He folded the plastic strip in half, slid it through the closed drivers door, and hooked it around the lock post and then pulled it upwards. Hey Presto! As a result I now carry a piece of plastic strip in my purse. It taught me a lesson but living in a very rural area, it's very easy to get complacent and I have slipped a bit with regards to security recently.
