Mk6 brake problem

Postby biggles » Sun Mar 18, 2012 4:43 pm

Hi all, new to this forum and need some adviceI
I have a 52 reg 2002 Diesel,260 SWB, FWD. The front brake calipers were sticking and eventually stuck solid.I fitted 2 new reconditioned calipers, bled the brakes and thought that was it. However several weeks later the brakes are starting to stick after the pedal is released and the pedal also feels hard to push whilst driving.
I disconnected the pipe (with the one way valve in it) from the servo and also disconnected it from the quick release connector at the vacuum pump end.
Blew throught it in the direction of the vacuum pump and there was no resistance whatsoever, however blowing from the other direction i could just manage to blow through it, and i mean just a tiny bit. Would this cause the problem of sticking calipers ?

Any help appreciated.

the vac pipe will have a 1 way valve on it which is why u can blow one way easily and not the other...master cylinder is proberbly sticking but check your floor mats if fitted arent catching under the brake pedal.

Hi all,

Had another look earlier and disconnected the vacuum pipe from the servo unit end only and there was plenty of vacuum/suction so i can only imagine it would be the master cylinder applying a small amount of positive pressure for some reason (worn seals perhaps?) the brake pedal isnt sticking or fouled.
Never had this problem before so probably end up trying a new master cylinder first...

check the brake flexi pipes just done mine after the brakes were sticking. o/s one started to stick after the pedal was released for about 5-10 seconds then it was binding all the time. changed pads and discs which eased it for a day. once i had changed the flexi no problem.

I would also suggest checking and replacing the flexi hoses

Flexi for me too, if u can manage to get them binding on so pistons will not go back as my last one was, crack open brake pipe to flexi union, if you still can't push caliper piston back try open bled nipple, if it does then allow piston to travel back suggests fault in flexi. If it went back when u opened union joint would suggest master cylinder fault. If you understand my point.
If it not a Ford then you can keep it.

Got the same problem myself. Bought a brand new caliper which helped for about a week. Problem is now back. Almost bought a new master cylinder this evening. Will try a new flexi hose first I think.

Anyone got any tips on getting the flexi hoses off please ?
Just replaced a caliper with no joy so its the hose 2moro but looks well rusty at the inboard end and I dont want it to disintegrate the second I put a spanner on it.

Thanks in advance.

Clean the joint and wd40 it and use a proper brake spanner and as it loosens make sure the brake pipe doesn't turn with the nut or it will damage it
