All this talk of winter tyres has got me actually considering buying some for the van, this would be the first time ever in the 20+ years I've been buying winter tyres

Surely there's not that much if a difference?

In a way you are right - with winter tyres there is not a lot of difference between driving on snow and ice and driving on tarmac.

I drove onto an empty overflow car park on Tuesday morning that had been "cleared" and was now solid, smooth sheet ice, parked up and got out. Two cars tried to follow me, one ended up skating right round 180 degrees, and the second one seeing what happened to the first one, slid to a stop and just span out trying to move again.

When I came back half an hour later, I got in and drove off easy peasy. Both the other cars were just abandoned where they stood!

Difference between winter and summer tyres is the compound, mainly. Winter tyre compound is softer and provides more traction below 7 degrees where summer tyre becomes hard. Groove pattern is chunkier too, provides better traction on snow. All test of all season tyres show that it is inferior to both summer and winter tyres.

I snuck my van into the workshop at lunchtime, as there was a bay spare beside the door, and replaced the front brake pads and one drop link.
At least I didn't have to go outside to get tools in the afternoon, left it there till home time
But did run 30 mins past lunchtime so had a running commentary from all the guys starting back after a feed

Similarly, I came home tonight, red warning on the dash (-2), but the road looked clear of the snow and ice which was still there this morning when I left. Drove up normally and braked to reverse on to the drive, manoevering round a car parked opposite. Parked up, got out of the van, and nearly went ar** over t** on the sheet ice on the drive. Went to cross the road to speak to a neighbour, and that was even worse. The van with it's Alpin's hadn't slipped a wheel at all, so I had no idea it was as bad as it was till I tried walking on it :!:
