2003 LDV 2.4 engine differences from Transit

Postby lse1990 » Sat Jul 12, 2014 1:51 pm

Hi,

I have recently brought an LDV 400 with the Ford 2.4 engine in it. I am a bit confused ( as I must have been when I thought it was a good idea to save some money when buying it instead of a transit) but that's done now! Basically I am getting the flashing glow plug light, my first instincts was the camshaft sensor, but I cannot find one anywhere on the engine! So I'm guessing there is not one. So I turned to Crankshaft sensor, when I phoned local motor factors and searched online this is where the confusion kicked in as I noticed a lot of places did not have a crankshaft sensor for an LDV but did a transit, which I thought fair enough transits are more popular and maybe they just don't register it as the same engine, but I noticed when I did a search for transit parts it showed that they did stock camshaft sensors for them! Also on GSF the only place I could find a LDV crankshaft sensor, the one for a transit is a different part number also they list a camshaft sensor for a transit but not a LDV. I made sure I searched for the same 2.4 engine as well.

So are the engines more different than I initially thought? Have I got a camshaft sensor and I'm totally missing it? ( can't see how as I even removed the intlet manifold). Or have the motor factors themselves got it wrong?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

LDV only used the 75 or 90ps TDDi engine in the Convoy which doesn't have a camshaft sensor :)

It's exactly the same engine as in a 75/90ps TDDi RWD Transit :D

hI,
ldv FLASHING GLOW PLUG LIGHT , common on these is throttle pedal sensor intermitent failure , no go , only tickover
Restart will clear codes.

Reading fault codes first is the only way to proceed with out potentially expensive guesswork.

If you want cheap, trouble free motoring, I'd suggest removing and selling your Duratorq and gearbox and fitting a 2.5 Di turbo engine and gearbox, from an earlier model, with Bosch mechanical pump conversion. You'd have cash left over, more power than the LDV Duratorq, and a much more reliable, simpler to maintain and cheaper to run vehicle. Easy, nuts and bolts swap.

Perfection is reached, not when there's nothing left to add, but when there's nothing left to remove.

Is this seriously a viable option as I have had enough of my Duratorque, I've been working on it on and off for 2 weeks and the thing still isn't running!

To carry out the conversion what will I need other than the engine and gearbox? Are the mounts the same? is it a job a fairly competent home mechanic could do with the right tools and equipment?

Thanks
