The way I see it is solid is cheaper and if it was possible ford would of went solid on all vans but they didn't so I'd replace like for like for smooth power delivery

Usually its the 6 speeds which dont like solid flywheels, 5 speeds tend to cope better with solid flywheels.

Thats because in the uk vans rust before the boxes break up, iv'e seen 6 speeds with 200000 miles third gear blown up to pieces especially the 140's

Personally I think there is a good reason why they got one and best kept that way.

It's down to how you drive them, Too much throttle at low revs, in too high a gear is what breaks gearboxes on high powered models, it's called torque. Ford should have cured the problem by designing a stronger gearbox, rather than curing the symptoms, by fitting a DMF.

Perfection is reached, not when there's nothing left to add, but when there's nothing left to remove.

If the 'higher output' models need a DMF to protect the gearbox, should you not retro-fit a DMF following a 're-map'?

Like Andy says, using the mid range torque will wreck your gearbox, adding more and using it will wreck it sooner.

Sensible driving will 'preserve' your gearbox far longer than a DMF, solid conversions cost less than replacement DMF's, spend the money you save on your children

I have fitted a SMF to my MK6 and everything has been fine for 18 months. |Half the cost (but change the spigot bearing too)Just sounds a bit "Old Skool Ford" like on the release bearing,...................................................but it is the better engine. :P :P

But yours is petrol/LPG.

High power diesels have a nasty "bang" on combustion. The dmf absorbs the shock from each explosion. Apart from protecting the entire drivetrain it is also there to reduce vibration through the vehicle to make it more comfortable.
