NoMoreVitos wrote:Hi from Australia again, I finally drove it far enough to get the fault but it came in again today, Now, whilst driving the response to throttle started to get very sluggish, keeping my speed very low and sluggish, then I lost most all throttle control, I slipped it into neutral and flattened the pedal and held it down it went slowly to 1500rpm I did it a second time and it went to 2500rpm and the third time it started responding correctly, I drove another couple of K's and it started going sluggish again with poor throttle control, I turned off the motor and waited a minute and started it again but it was still not responding well to throttle, I does not do this much on the open road, it mostly does it when in traffic and stop starting, it will often be driving OK but when I lift my foot from the throttle and push it back down again that is when I most often loose control of the throttle and it goes what I call soft. I have replaced the pedal control without a result. Any Clue as to what i should be looking at?

NoMoreVitos wrote:Well I finally have a conclusion to report, I was not satisfied with the gloom and doom mechanics, all saying Fuel Pump or Injectors, they never guarantee it will fix the problem and there is no refund on their work, I kept looking for someone who seemed honest and knew what he was talking about, as a mechanic myself (not diesel) I had a good idea when someone was peeing in my pocket and telling me its raining.
I found a mobile Diesel Mechanic who said he could work it out, $100.00 for inspection and diagnosis. Whats a $100.00. Dealers want more for a Diagnostic and you have to leave your car there all day plus drop off and pick up so I said go ahead.
He came, we drove around for 45 minutes and guess what, you guessed it, it would not go into fault with the exception of a bit of hunting at idle. He listened intently to my complaint and thought about it a while and we came back to my home, He then said, I think it is the High pressure relief valve on the Fuel Rail. The further explanation wont serve any purpose, he removed the return line with the motor running and it started pouring out fuel, he said if it surges with variations of idle speed the valve is stuffed but he could not replace it I would have to go to Ford and have a relief valve counter reset and PCM recalibration. He was not equipped for that.
I left the van where it was and decided to book in with Ford the next day. I drove it to the Post office in the morning and it was running perfect, Idle good, No missing anywhere, I have been driving it a week now and I can only guess it had either dirt or air in the line and it is now gone, possibly by removing the line it purged the system of the problem.
Well now I think I know what it was, I have ordered the part and it is going in my glove compartment as a Just in case thing, I want to be sure so I will drive it for a few months to see if the problem returns.
From a Maximum of $4200.00 quote for repair by Ford Plus a diagnostics scan, down to $100.00 and its done, plus $130.00 for a precautionary part soon to reside in my glove compartment. This is the rip off that is modern electronics on Cars. You can fit the stuff but you do not seem to be able to diagnose accurately to a specific component a fault, it is a crap shoot with the customers wallet as bank unless you find an old school honest mechanic with street smarts that can just listen and diagnose. Like the old days when your DCOE Webber, Delorto or Amal Carb went on the fritz, some guys could just listen and say this is your problem. Ok so here is a possible quick fix you can do yourself.
If your problem is like mine, Rough idle, occasional stalling of engine at idle, occasional loss of throttle control particularly in heavy stop start traffic but hardly ever on the open road, pop the return line from the fuel rail with the engine running, pump a bit of fuel on the road (outside someones place you don't like) watch for surging with idle variation, return the line after about a minute or two, could be the pressure relief valve. Anyone care to chime in?
