Diff pinion oil leak along splines & nut threads

Postby ECROZ » Wed Oct 29, 2014 12:12 pm

Hi folks,

The transit i just fitted the new motor to has come back for it's 1st checkover b4 it goes back in to normal service... This is 60 hrs non-stop driving for 6000 Km per trip ! Every 2 weeks.

They reported an oil leak, turns out to be the diff area. Specifically no oil seal failure but the oil is coming up the splines and collecting around the pinion nut then getting expelled.

May have been asked b4 but i need the pinion drive flange nut torque/ setting up procedure for this vehicle WF0NXXTTFN7D19421

Thanks in advance

Have a genuine kit arriving tomorrow think it's a seal & locknut only.... LOl i still remember fibre wadding washers on some vehicles.

My initial thought was excessive backlash due to a loose nut.. but not having the torques or set up procedure i'm reluctant to rattle it up :)

Dammmit it's been a long day.. meant to say a loose nut due to excessive backlash.

About an inch n a half at propshaft... they call em tail-shafts hers in Oz
and believe me a wing is a guard ( i thought they was outside Buckhouse)

Have a look as this web site workshop-manuals.com/ford
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

Thanks Dave,

Just what I was after.. Gonna check the breather & hose coming off it may be a blockage

Owner said they had a diff rebuild a while back so I'll not mess with the pinion - crownwheel settings.

Thanks again

Having looked, you have the 06- Dana axle, the shims are very expensive so it is likely that you can't do anything on the cheap :-(
I managed to get a set of shims on the cheap but still had to find an engineer who has a mag grinder to cut down the shims to the correct thickness, you should buy a pinion seal and replace it, atleast the dana doesn't have the collapsible spacer in the pinion so you should be able to torque it back up :-)
Backlash is easy to fix with the correct shims, if you have an engineering company who deals with axles of this type then they may be cheap enough to warrant doing it :-)
