I need to ask why are you all fusing the dummy obd ports?
A fuse helps to protect electrical units getting damaged?
I think mines going in unfused so there machine will get maximum damage! I can justify replacing my battery to save my vans from being stolen!

An unfused short circuit will burn out wiring, and could possibly lead to ECU damage :!:
You need to add a fuse for the rating of the wiring, it won't stop the laptop getting damaged if that's going to happen :P

I'm not sure that you'll achieve what you think you will with 12v :?
I would imagine that a laptop will have some sort of overload protection on the input wires to stop accidental mis-wiring, but it's the thought that counts

Well, pins 2 and 10 expect a high voltage of 5v, pin 2 expects 7v, and the can bus lines expect a voltage differential of +2v , so if pin 5 and pin 15 are earth, then all of these connectors are expecting a low voltage and are being presented with 12v.......

As I said, I don't know what *actual* damage this would do but I imagine one of three scenarios.....

1) Nothing happens, reader cannot connect - scroat moves on.
2) Reader displays error - scroat decides van has issues and moves on.
3) Reader is damaged and stops working - Confused scroat moves on.

It is unlikely that scroat will realise what has happened.

Worst case - van is left alone. Best case van is left alone and scroat needs to buy a new reader.

Actually, I suppose the worst case is that scroat realises what has happened and decides to smash up the van in revenge, but this is highly unlikely. Typically he will be relying on getting in, starting the van and disappearing with it quickly and quietly. I would expect that faced with a van that won't connect he will panic and leg it.

Sadly, yes, you would need to be first on the scene to disconnect it :P

Well i done the 1st van yesterday. Took less that 2 hours to fit 2 dummy ports and less than £10.
The original port can be moved easily when seperated from rest of wiring loom. I have hidden this nicely and fitted a dummy port just in front of it. I also tapped up the real port so cant be seen properly. All that is visible is the 2 dummy ports and real obd port is invisible. Would take awhile to find anyway.
I like the idea of connecting to inverter but dont fancy the jail time! Lol

Having a think back to what was said earlier about a locksmith getting in and starting a van in 2 mins. If the van is deadlocked does the key still open the door? Stupid question but i havnt tried to unlock when deadlocked.

Yes, a bump key will open your van even when deadlocked :(

best way of stopping the van being driven off is seperate immobiliser but which has a fuel cut off valve, this way the van will start up thief thinks he is away and then van will cut out as it runs out of fuel..yes it means having to bleed your fuel system up but better than having no van...
if really paronoid about losing your van dont forget a tracker is better idea...or removable steering wheel...
