Timing chain kit costs materials and labour

Postby MacLeodHeating » Wed Nov 26, 2014 10:47 pm

Hi guys/gals.
56 plate mk7 transit 2.2 fwd. 110k

I've been given a price of £790 (£690 for cash) by my local garage to supply and fit new timing chain and replace oil and filter.
Does this sound like a lot? Seems a bit steep to me, having seen the timing chain kit online for anywhere between £100 and £160.
Also, when I've been looking at these kits online some of them are marketed as 'fully upgraded'. What was this upgrade and is it recommended that I go for the upgraded version?

Am I right in saying that I should be making sure they put in 5w-30 fully synthetic oil when doing the oil change?

Last one, any knowledgeable mechanics around South west/South London/Sutton/Surrey willing to do this work?

Thanks
John

I have just had this done on my mk6 160k miles. New tensioner, guides, chain, new timing belt cover, (not the old one stuck on with sealent) oil and filter £590 plus vat. That was at a ford transit specalist they only do vans but specalist in transits. I rang ford main dealer up and I think I got £320 in parts or something like that's can't remember. But yeah your price is right. About the oil I would of put 10w/40 I have never had to put any oil on my van in 5 years it gets serviced every 15,000 miles with them I'm not sure what kiln they use but I no it will be correct! 5w/30 is what I put in my fiesta it's thinner so will heat up quickly won't be a lubricantave as 10-40 with the cold weather coming up.

5w-30 is the preferred oil recommended by ford. You can use 10w/40 but it "May result in longer cranking periods"

And poor throttle response when cold.
