Idiots guide to IDS

Postby Damien89 » Sun Aug 13, 2017 8:45 pm

Hi everyone, managed to get a pc with an original ids software. Managed to turn off drl's, speed limiter, auto relocking and the start/stop system.
I then checked the module programming and it showed me that 2 modules need updating. Does that mean that theres an update for the pcm (ecm)?
Forgot to mention mine is a mk8 2.2 euro6

This morning i went for a drive with my mk8 to see if the changes i made yesterday had any effects on it, and first thing i noticed is that the anti stall/idle up when taking off wasn't working. Then after a few minutes a 'service engine soon' message came up. After reading the codes there was a code something for 'gear lever position.....', after thinking a bit about it i came to the conclusion that turning off the start/stop feature could have caused this. So after several tries i managed to turn it back on with ids and everything came back to normal. I think what happened was that either turning off the start/stop feature turned off a sensor from the clutch pedal or the gear lever thus the ecm couldn't know if it was in gear or neutral.

Dont turn off the start/stop feature on these mk8 2.2 euro 6 vans/minibuses.

Evening All...
I know this isn't IDS but it is sort of fault code/diagnostic related:

I had a chance to have a quick play with the PC version of Forscan on my Mk7 140 RWD over the weekend...I must say, I'm quite impressed with it. Loads onto the PC easily, I have Windoze 7 Pro on my lappy, I bought the ELM27 unit as recommended by some of the other chaps, this one:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-Modified ... 2749.l2649

To put it in a few words....It just works..! :mrgreen: The ELM327 drivers loaded automatically when I plugged it into the USB port of my laptop. I haven't had a chance to do any learns or any of the service functions/module programing as yet...will do in the next couple of weeks.

IDS works too but there's quite a bit of fiddling and fumbling with software/hacks etc.. to get it to work and the VCM-II units can be a bit hit 'n miss as to whether you get one that works as advertised.

The ELM327 unit suggests it can do all of the following within Forscan:

Functions:
* read/erase fault codes from ALL modules, including OBD2/EOBD
* access modules on both HS-CAN and MS-CAN mode
* read vehicle configuration
* actuator tests
* Live Data
* injector coding
* software updates
* service procedures
* force DPF regeneration
* programming
* coding
* adaptations

Whether it's totally true or not will remain to be tested, but upon initial use....everything I did play with appeared to work just fine. I had live data running whilst I went for a quick drive around my local area...that worked fine also.. :mrgreen:

Anywho, I'll do some more testing over the coming weeks and report my findings good or bad..

Most of the sites on this thread which people bought their VCM2 from have now closed down. Can anyone recommend a reputable site to buy one?

I'd consider using Forscan, much less drama getting it working. Much cheaper and does 99% of what IDS can do too..!

I have been pleased with forscan so far but haven`t tried anything particularly technical. I have a bluetooth elm but with no ms-can switch, do you know what functions the switch is needed for?

Would also be interested to know what forscan cant do that ids can as have been thinking about buying vcm instead of an elm with the switch.

I "think" the ms-can switch is just so you can access some of the can-bus system items on the Mk7's and later vehicles. I have the USB unit (with the switch) and Forscan asked me to switch from one to the other whilst I was fumbling around in it's gubbins.
