Gearbox gave birth to a bolt!

Postby Luke J » Tue Jan 27, 2015 8:39 pm

I know my missus is pregnant and due next week, but I didn't know my van was gonna drop one today!
I am so not having a lot of luck with my van last few months. 3rd thing in 3 months.
It's been dodgy jumping out of 2nd for maybe a year, but today I went from 1st to 2nd, it stayed in 1st and my stick went all floppy  kavanagh turned up and winched it on the low loader then it dumped the baby bolt and two 10p coin side lumps of my dif case.

Now, to save me probably £300ish that I haven't got because JAN/Fen = £0 in the bank, has anyone managed to use JB weld or similar or am I really and truly without a paddle up a stinky creek?

Sooo pished of right now.

Ahh my signature doesn't work does it. Mk6 '03 FWD 2.0 dura 75ps t260 swb low roof. I think it's the fork selector bolt and the crown gear pushed it out the case. I'll grab a few pics tomorrow. the 2 chunks of casing looked quite flat, the bolt looked quite soft where a gear cut 2 deep groves out of it and I think about 2 pints maybe a bit more of really clean box oil.
I must change my avitar, I haven't had her for 3-4 years.
I am but a minion lord knobrot

A Minion eh..?? I've got nuthin'.

All understood....One would assume that if there are one or more gears trying to get out...your gearbox is probably toast....I guess a couple of photos of the offending item will help get to the bottom of it though. There's much more experienced guys on here than I..

The moral is engine and gearbox faults should be fixed sooner rather than later, coacher is breaking a 2.0 100ps but I'd guess it's the same gearbox and before you fit the box upgrade the selector pivot bolt

Ha you see it was always on my list to sort out that gear linkage, however i believe it was the bolt working its way out geting in the way of something for second gear. very sporadic too. It seems to be a common but not very common fault compared to cables going wrong and the selector turret seising up. hence I never found a warning of if second gear is a problem, sort the thing asap before your diff explodes. I did find a gearbox place online that made a page specific to it, after the fact of course lol. that said if the stick feel like a spoon in soup, don't move it, don't ever roll it. Sadley mine rolled on the low loader with the bolt inbetween the diffs crown and case. Didn't even make a noise it just bleed.

Has anyone had any luck patching a gearbox hole with JBweld or some other epoxy. TBH I'm gonna have to try it, I just can aford a box and labour for probably 2 months.

Any ideas on what box oil i need and how much.

I haven't got anything to loose trying a bodge.

Back to working from the R reg Scenic again, mind you I did fix the hatch back gas struts last week. Just need cup holder, phone holder and a fricking tow bar and trailer

Ooooo, where is the selector fork bolt located, I thought it was part of the selector head and I could fix it without geting the box out. Oooo F**k! Oooo F**k! Oooo F**k! I need the brick wall emote!!!

If that bolt has come from inside the box...and it looks like it has, (possibly the 1st-2nd shift fork retaining bolt)...the box will need to come out....no way around it I'm afraid. Whatever that bolt was holding inside the box, is now probably floating around inside. Also, the bolt has been clobbered by the crownwheel and forced out through the casing....if this is the case...God knows what other damage has it done inside..??

Best/cheapest option is a known good box from the scrappy.. :(

That looks very much like the selector pinch bolt that we all threadlock back in, which if it is, it can be got at by just removing the selector turret off the top of the box, however as others have said, what damage has it done to cogs / rest of box as it was "ejected" :?
