Fitting Cruise Control VM TDCi 2.4 RWD

Postby NoMoreVitos » Thu Jan 29, 2015 10:37 pm

Hi to all, I would like a bit of guidance on how to go about this, I want to fit Cruise Control to my 2007 2.4 TDCi RWD.
I notice a lot of aftermarket kits and was wondering about others experiences with fitting them and their suitability, quirks and faults.
I have a lot of experience with buying the cheapest bits and then regretting it. Should I look for genuine?
The miles I am doing at the moment on country roads is making it appealing to do the conversion to give my right leg a rest.

There is a very good thread on this forum, just search for cruise control and you will find it.

Interesting instructions, I am not sure I would be comfortable getting that deep into the nuts n guts wiring of my Van.

The aftermarket ones look like a simple plug n Play set up, am I dreaming?

I am sure the original Cruise Control is the best but I don't think I will find one easy and then I have to find someone who understands the updates required without charging me an arm and a leg to set it all into operation.

I think it would be harder to fit the aftermarket and set it all up imo.
Ford way is fit steering wheel, fit bcm(if needed), fit 2 wires.
Them program it using ids.

If you have the high spec bcm already then there's a chance you have the 2 wires (loom spec needs to be higher too) on which case, fit steering wheel and program. :-)
You can easily check those 2 things :-)

OK, now I'm up to speed, all this stuff is contained in the steering wheel and it is the controller? never having seen one I was not sure what was going on when I looked through the pics. So Now I have to find a Replacement Cruise Control Type Steering Wheel, swap them, wire it in and get it reprogrammed. How do I find out if I have a Body Control Module you mentioned.

The buttons are on the steering wheel, the bcm is the controller of the cruise (and other high end functions you may want later).
Flip down the glovebox, then flip down the front fusebox to reveal the bcm, it should have a label on it that has a big 2 letters at the end, high spec is cd, cj etc, you can post a picture of the label or post the numbers.
It's in the first bit of the other post i linked.
The wires are easy, remove the lower steering wheel cowl and the connector located at 6 o clock is for steering and horn and airbag, you want pins 4 and 5 in the middle of the block. :-)

Thank you, I will do the picture thing tomorrow. Is there a part number I should be searching for the appropriate steering wheel?

Just get a focus cmax 1, another member bought a focus 1 but it had different internals and airbag, focus cmax 1 looks the same as the transit 1 but with buttons and silver inserts, the airbag from your wheel will fit it so no need to buy that included.
Just look at our wheel pics on here and you'll see which 1 you need, the 1 that you don't need has a black plastic square piece on it that goes around where the bag goes.
This 1 you want.

It looks like it is missing the bit behind it tho and another member had a bit of trouble getting 1 cheap, I'm not sure if they are interchangeable from yours to that 1, the picture is for illustration only, so whatever you do just check it all fits etc :-)

I still haven't found the back piece. I can't swap it from the old wheel because it's moulded rubber.

That wheel looks good, just needs the leather stitching up.

I think you also need a new clockspring, no? I fitted the focus c-max wheel ages ago but haven't got the socket on the clockspring for the button loom to connect...

No you don't, the cruise steering wheel has the extra 2 wires fitted so you unplug your old wheel from the clock spring and fit new wheel and plug it in (2 extra wires included in the connector)
All clock springs have the same number of connections in the ribbon so all you are doing is adding 2 from the connector for cruise buttons and 2 on the other side connector then connecting them to the bcm to finish the circuit 8)

I had a friend offered me a 2010 VM cruise control from a wreck (I am still waiting for a picture) does anyone know it will fit the 2007?
