Tapping noise on mk7 Transit Diesel

Postby paul6car » Tue Mar 03, 2015 8:34 pm

Hello,
I am a new member and I am wondering if any of you can help me with a problem on a Ford Transit.
The vehicle is;- 2007 Ford Transit 2.2ltr TDCi Diesel with about 90,000 miles on it.
It was a Cat D write off and has been nicely repaired body wise by ourselves as amateurs.
The engine was not started for about 12 months and when it was started there was a tapping noise coming from it.
We have changed the oil and filter plus the fuel filter.
There is no sign of debris in the oil although it was very dirty.
We have used an engine flush on it.
The oil light goes out as soon as the engine turns over and does not show on hot tick over.
The noise appears to come from the top end when a stethoscope is used on it.
If it were a petrol engine it would sound like a noisy tappet or faulty hydraulic lifter.
There is no visible smoke from the exhaust.
The engine seems to rev freely.
There are no fault codes present using FORScan.
I notice from one forum response that a faulty timing control solenoid can cause a noise, but I have no idea what the noise would sound like.
I have put a short video of it with the noise on youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGYmuyrUhpw
I would be grateful for and help in identifying the problem.
Thanks
Paul

thats a knocking not tapping, when you first started it after a year of not running you just didnt fire it striaght up ?

it will have very very dry bearing and can stick to the crank same goes for the little ends as they have no oil feed apart from the oil squirters

Check that the bolts holding injector clamps are tight,
You will have to remove the air filter for access, tightening torque is around 8nm then 180 degrees,
If they are loose,or this cures it you would be wise to replace the retaining bolt in the least (as they are a stretch bolt)
And the injector sealing/fire washers.

If its not the above,i'd be removing the rocker cover next....

Hi,
Thanks for your comments.
I will try and answer them.
Karl The engine was rotated several times on the starter before it was started so I am fairly sure that it had oil circulated.
There is no trace of any metal particles in the oil and no film on it.
MJS Roofing We thought it could be diesel knock but we used FORScan software and ran the pilot learning program which showed all seemed to be programmed ok. If you see the youtube video it seems like a hydraulic tappet not working or a cam problem?
Frag The injector clamps are tight and there is no sign of leakage. Like you I suspect that the cam cover must come off. Any suggestions on successfully removing injectors without damage?

the engine is under compression with the injectors in it so has load :!: from experiance with these even rebuild 4 of them i always turn over and over and over and over over and even thow you have no metal fragment you may have an oval bearing causing this noise

Looks as if I am going to have to bite the bullet and have a look in the cam cover.

When you get the cam cover off, have a good look at the "Rocker Ladder" hold down bolts....check to see if it has lifted a bolt or two, have heard reports of pulled threads etc...
Just a thought.
