FWD gearbox removal/replacement

Postby DEANO3528 » Sat Jul 11, 2015 5:18 pm

Hi all, first post on here.
My eldest son's clutch/flywheel needs changing on his 2lt FWD.
Decided to go solid and so bought a complete kit.
Estimated time to complete please and any little tips or tricks or pitfalls for the unsuspecting as we don't have a manual. Or a link to an online manual would be handy
Many thanks in advance

Before you strip it put your van details on here as most fwds had solid flywheels from new and you may have the wrong parts.

Also get a new selector bearing and shaft as they tend to seize up causing loss of gears

I done one on my 100hp mk6, took me about 6hrs for clutch, flywheel and crank seal. As Karl says lifting the box back on is the worst bit.

I done mine on the drive on my own, :D

Fair enough
But to be honest i would have preferred my packs of wood because i would have used my forklift at the side to offer the box up :-(

Is the selector bearing not just a maintaince issue?
Just wants a blob of lube on it when you service the van ?
Mine seized up last year bish bosh bit of oil and its been splendid ever since

Captain Hook! Well met sirrah! Has been a while.

@bambi mk 1 yep ta, I did give the reg to the supplier who said it's the correct one.

@blue estate, we had trouble with that having seized before but resolved it with a few gallons of duck fat.

As for weight of unit, I can imagine, having humped around my fair share of LR 'boxes but I do have an engine crane at my disposal. The crank seal is a good point. No leak evident but might be worth getting in advance.
Many thanks for info so far.

Deano put the axle stands under the chassis not the x member.Remove the trackrod ends and wishbones leaving the cv joints in the hubs and pull the shafts out of the box.You will need to remove the drivers side inner shaft bracket.Remove the two bolts in the steering rack and the ps pipes from the x member and pull it out of the way and tie back rack Remove cables and wiring .Drop the box down and remove.BE AWARE that the engine can slide out of the mounting on the drivers side chassis leg so don't let the engine swing to low  2 to 2 1/2 hours to change for someone whos removed a Landie box :lol:PS just slide it out on the trolley jack no crane needed .
