Loss of all gears and no selection.

Postby Topham52 » Sat Aug 01, 2015 9:47 am

I recently bought a transit 04 t280 and it's been fine right up until I was out the drive way and then pulled up to answer my phone.

I went to select first gear once I'd finished my call and I got nothing. No drive or feeling like it was in gear at all. I thought it could be the cables for the selector on the ball joints popping off but checked both ends and they are fine. Almost look new.

I have depressed the clutch and It returns with force and no noises
I'm not 100% but it feels like if I put the gear lever into first position I can almost glide across all the gears where they should be without returning it to neutral.

I have no idea or experience with transits and as such I'm a bit out of ideas.

I've had a search and no topic seems to be similar so I apologise if I'm asking a repeated question.

As ever, if anyone could provide me with some help then I will be eternally grateful.

Thanks

Adam.

Selector bearing has gone or the bolt on it has dropped out

Thanks for the reply. Is it easy to do to replace them or is it a garage job? I just can't get it anywhere unless I tow it.

Finding and removing the loose bolt from the box can be fun!

Oh joy. I look forward to searching for it. Any tips other than a magnet on a stick?

Don't run with bolt inside box or you may need new box when it gets shot out of casing

Thanks guys for the spot on diagnosis. Managed to strip it out roadside and fish the bolt out with a magnet on the second try. I think I got incredibly lucky. If it wasn't for the responses I'd be up the creek. Thanks for saving me a lot of money by giving the advice you have.

From one very happy user a massive thank you.
