Check that injector that appears to be leaking.
Check the connection of the injector pipe on the injector. If this is not the cause then the chances are that it could be the sealing washer at the bottom of the injector in the cylinder head. This will cause a lack of compression on that cylinder. As for the blue smoke on start up that is generally oil burning ( then it clears according to your description) Check valve stem oil seals.
A compression check is worth doing for sure because if this is not within limits then all other attempted engine adjustment may be in vain.
Remember an engine is just an air compressor and if its loosing pressure it wont perform to the design specs. Compression test first.
Hope this helps
I only go to the garage for mot

Gonna get a compression test done, and get it sorted hopefully. Have done a fair old bit of welding/undersealing and painting/polishing just got it looking decent and now this.
Will report back results when I get around to it, hope this helps the OP too.
Cheers.

Back again. Just been over to me "mechanic" and basically got told there's no point doing a compression test, plus he wouldn't be able to do the stem seals without the head off.
On a worse note he reckoned they've had a good few transits in, and that changing the glow plugs would solve this problem.
Stumped now.
Maybe second opinion, I don't wanna waste £40 on glow plugs and another £800 to fix it when they snap off etc.

sounds like a right clown!!! find a proper mechanic and ask him to do a compression test on it for you

Just getting a fellas number of me neighbor, reckons he's a decent mechanic only works on vans so fingers crossed might actually get me sorted.

Been flat out the last couple of weeks, still haven't got hold of a decent mechanic. Van runs fine apart from the Smokey start mind.
