diesel pump?

Postby novakamena21 » Sun Aug 30, 2015 12:44 pm

Driving along at 2am in the rain on a German Autobhan//my 2002 coughed once ..flashed heater light once and cut out. Many hundreds of euro later it was diagnosed as FUEL PRESSURE TO HIGH OR LOW...Starts and runs on easy start. Garage said new pump needed but would sell me a second hand one for 900Euro and 500 to fit...said they had to take timing cover off so could do timing kit same time..I pointed out that there is an access hole for the pump and they didnt like that...Ive checked filters etc and there is no sign of muck or swarf. Tried running diesel into pump from a can on the roof but no joy. Ive left the van there and flown home. Im going to take some tools and a pump and change it myself. Im told a Mondeo pump will fit...van is a 90 T350. Will I need the ecu to match the pump? Anything else? Or cab I just get a local garage to code it? Any advice on my planned course? Cheers

Do a search on vp30 fuel pump problems mate, it is covered loads and you'll find the info you need. :-)

Most of the time it is the fuel pump ecu that packs up and not the pump, thorough diagnostics should determine this reasonably.

You need to get fault codes so the members can help you more, it could be a failed pump ecu or the timing could have slipped due to faulty tensioner etc.

Thanks Vantuner I did a search but nothing confirms the Mondeo pump will fit. Canrt remember what the code was but fuel pressure was the issue. Ive bought a pump from a mate and will go back and either change the whole unit or just electrics and code it. Cheers

So being unable to get much help on this I have bought a pump from an identical van which was seen running and driving. Heading back to fit it but been told I will be fined for working on the van in a public place. It might have to go into a workshop. Question is....how long should it take for a decent workshop to change and code the pump? Cheers D

Common failure is the edc not the pump, you could also have broken wires or crank sensor or fuel filter/head problem etc, which is why you need to get codes read and rule that it is actually the edc which has failed.

You've bypassed those steps and bought a pump :-(

Full pump chance probably takes a few hours, I've read that the edc can be changed without changing the pump, in less than an hour.

Coding takes about 40 mins but maybe less.

You may change the pump but still have the original fault and be back to square 1.

But you haven't said very clearly what has been done/checked.

Thanks Vantuner. I dont remember the code but it was #fuel pressure to high or low# Ford in Germany say its the pump..They want 500quid labour to change it! So that was my reasoning for buying the pump...a known good one from a mate for 80 Gbp. Was trying to get the van recovered home but looks like its a long bus trip with tolls to try to sort it myself.. :( Cheers
