rear lights and that damned computer

Postby WILT » Sat Oct 03, 2015 2:38 am

Has anyone tried replacing the incandescant bulbs in their trailer lights with say three or more leds in series and then just paralleling out the rear clusters or would the computer still notice the drop in resistance and cause problems [ like no brake lights etc. ]

I'd you have a bypass relay it shouldn't happen should it? :-)

The whole idea was to avoid switches, relays altogether. Just plug and go .I think I,ll just try it and post the result it may be useful for anyone with a new rack or trailer . t

All MK 7 trailer sockets should be wired through a bypass relay, then you can do whatever you like on the trailer

I assume the bypass relay switches off the van lights in favour of the trailer. If so I think I would prefer to have them left on as they would still be mostly visible through the motorcycle on the rack and would therefore give added security as long as the computer doesn't throw a hissy fit and start turning things off.

No it uses a 12v feed to power trailer lights and connects in to rear loom for sensing perporses only

I have fitted high level led, Side lights, Brake lights and indicators fitted to my van, and have wired them into the towbar / bypass relay circuit, there was no problem with the side lights / brake lights, but I still had to fit a resistor into the indicator circuit on both sides to stop the fast indicator flashing rate, and I have switches inside the rear of the van so that I can turn off the high level indicators, so that I can use a led trailer board, when towing.

I am mystified ( not an unusual state when it comes to wiring looms ) as to how the relay senses and switches the 12 v feed to the separate feeds for left and right indicators, stop lights , reversing light ( when duplicated ) and hazards.?

Yep  as not to overload canbus system the bypass relay connects in to rear light feeds to sense when a light circuit is working then using the 12v feed it turns on relevant trailer light

Well I never, what will they over complicate next, I thought fly by wire throttles were bad enough #160 instead of a cable , but the boys are onto that one I see., Ignition keys that decide not to work even if they fit the switch etc and they call this progress.

and which bright [ *spark* ] came up with the idea of having the same wire colour code [ orange ] for stop and tail .Even if you do play the game and buy the bits, that does seem churlish.
