Starting Problems - Grrrrr

Postby saltyhair81 » Sun Nov 22, 2015 5:09 pm

Hi All,

I have a MK7 Transit 110 280. She has been a dream the last 4 months until one day I couldn't start her. I thought it was the battery so bought a new heavy duty one which solved the problem, until the other day. I have changed the crankshaft angle sensor (what a :!: that was to get to), Battery and a new starter motor. Unfortunately it seems to have done absolutely nothing. If anything, after the starter, its worse! I have cleaned all the terminals to the starter and the old starter was pretty clean when it came out, as was the crank angle sensor so it appears the dual mass I would assume is ok.

Things that spring to mind are relays and starter solenoids if such things are fitted on these vans. I have attached a video to show the problem, the van is in daily use as my work vehicle so I'm getting extremely desperate. Once started, it drives really well which is even more frustrating.

It's an Ex EDF van, 122k on the clock if that makes any difference.

Any help would be appreciated beyond belief.

Kind Regards,

Joe

Ok, well I'm sure it's not the battery which leaves the earth as a possibility. Are there any common connections to check?

Check the earth connection from the starter to the body.
Check the battery earth lead connection to the body, it's one of the seat fixing bolts and might have got rusty.

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

It still sounds like the starter to me, it's always possible that the new one is faulty

Thank you so much for all the replies. After spending a bit of time earlier cleaning up the terminals and connections to the body, it appears it was an earth! Hope this can direct someone else if they have similar issues in the future. All the best.

Hello,

I have attached a video which is the worst it was, but it was really intermittent. There was clicking, sounded like a relay was going nuts.

You would put the key in, turn, then sometimes it would click multiple times and flash before turning over and other times it would click once and fire up. I did have a time when it didn't start at all.

Hope that helps.
